Thread regarding Ford layoffs

How much are you earning at Ford? How many years of experience?

If you were to be laid off next, would you be able to find a role making close to what you were making here?

A wise person once told me to always keep interviewing, because, you know, the job market is just fantastic right now. But hey, I still manage to get at least 2 to 3 calls per week. Sure, I’ve been ghosted a couple of times, crashed and burned in other interviews, but I’ve also succeeded in a couple. Most software engineering jobs in top-tier companies pay a whopping $150k for an experienced person. But in the Bay Area, I’m seeing offers of at least $300k (I know it’s hard to believe, but that’s what I’m interviewing for elsewhere. The jobs are pretty hard to get, but I’m getting there). Oh, and let’s not forget about the stocks! Because who doesn’t love a good stock option? The only way to make real money is to jump ship every three years. You can expect a measly 15% to 20% increment. I even convinced a third-tier supplier in Northville to offer me a base salary of $180k as a software architect. I didn’t go for it because the job was just so appealing.

I hadn't even considered that....

Of course Palo Alto salaries are higher due to cost of living differences.

Thank you for saying that.

I know some roles pay significantly higher to be competitive and appeal to specific highly educated / trained individuals. I forgot how crazy those salary numbers look when viewing Palo Alto figures from Dearborn.

I can see that if you're in Palo Alto.

Then you should absolutely ride this out as long as possible and keep collecting that paycheck. Hopefully you're able to save some money just in case Ford decides to punch your ticket some day.

@2sci+1nwHMmIM in model e, software, HTHD. Check out the notice boards, you will find labor condition applications posted. Most of the LCA’s are upwards of 150k.

I think 1jbq+1nwHMmIM had a typo. He meant to write 17K per year.

I'm GSR1 and I make 250K per year.... kidding.

@1jbq+1nwHMmIM

This is way outside the salary band for a GSR7.

I know some 'highly compensated individuals' who fill certain roles that Ford prioritizes (mostly software architects). But 170k exceeds even their compensation.

What department do you work in?

I'm halfheartedly hoping you're trolling and respond saying that you're in the Bracket group... fingers crossed...

"...my age was younger enough that it balanced out the pensioners"

I think this was in the plan. Ford hired a lot of +50 engineers who did not qualify for the pension and never would, then used us as pawns when they laid off the pensioners so they could claim they were being fair.

I know what type of answer you are hoping for. So I'll give it to you.

GSR8
120k
Over a decade at Ford
15 years total work experience post-college
Model E

Canned in August 2022.

My PRs were Achiever or High Achiever (back when that was a thing).

I was genuinely under the impression that they liked and valued the work I was doing.

I will never know for sure, but I believe that my salary grade and salary made me a target. And my age was younger enough that it balanced out the pensioners.

There are other industries that pay more than Ford: energy, IT, etc.

Easy to find jobs with ford experience at least 20% more base pay. Maybe every 30% to 50%.. what do you think is driving wages. Low labor supply high labor demand.

That is a question with many answers. Some companies will pay more then ford. Others paying less. Does not matter if the job is salaried or contract. I been laid off for almost one year now, it’s to the point I’m afraid to give salary range when they ask. I give them honest number of what ford was paying me some companies say they can’t afford me. I have 30 years experience
