Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Story on layoffs

Hi there,

My name's Yowei Shaw and I'm a journalist working on a story for the podcast This American Life (www.thisamericanlife.org) about layoffs, after getting laid off myself from NPR (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/25/us/npr-layoffs-podcasts.html).

It was an awful experience and I'm so sorry Dell is facing layoffs as well.

Which is why I'm reaching out. I'm looking to talk to workers who know or suspect layoffs are coming, but are still waiting to find out who's on the list. I'm hoping this story can shed light on what it's like to go through this and some of the larger questions and issues that surround layoffs.

If you're open to talking, please get in touch this week or next at shaw.yr@gmail.com. I can tell you more about what I'm working on, and if it helps, we can speak on background or off the record. Feel free to pass this along to anyone who's in the same situation and if you have any leads, I'm all ears.

Thanks for considering. Sending my very best to you and your colleagues.

Oh and here's my website (www.yoweishaw.com) if you want to find out more about me and my previous work.

Take care,
Yowei

@1ouq+1nzCBSaK don't really care about the Indians and Chinese stealing American jobs while still being in there own country. You're actually validating the poster's point It is cheaper for American companies to do this and this is why they do this, but it should stop when there are Americans standing in line to do that job. It's not the same as an immigrant trimming your hedges or cutting your grass where there aren't actual Americans that went to a four year college standing in line to do those jobs.....but in actuality are probably forced into it because the chinese and indians are stealing the tech jobs.

towel - you should also contact gm, at&t, and just about any other globalist company in america that doesn't give a cr-p about american workers over 40.

Better story is how Dell became a toxic workplace full of racists, s-xists, cyberbullying, and feudalism.

@1ivb+1nzCBSaK : H1B is not an issue - it's corporate greed that is and what we told is get even more done so you get more money some time later.

immigration is vital to keep service prices low ( see all mexicans ) however unhealthy balance of H1B employees makes them modern 'slaves' as they are locked into 'getting greencard one day' to company that sponsord their H1B . So no salary raises , no benefits etc .. when you say you compete with them - you really don't. What you compete is money that company you working for is wiling to spend on your qualities vs these with H1B

Getting better & doing more at the same price is corporate america , getting immigrants makes unions obsolete and since IT can be done pretty much anywhere (SW development etc) there ain't reasons for immigrants coming over in first place.

I know countless cases of Chinese or Indians working 16h/day 7days/week for last 2- years to get a chance for H1B - and all their work is based on mostly false hopes of better life.

And you have Wallstreet that you can participate on to get that modern slavery money to yourself - that's the way it works.
No , I do not like it but nothing I can do about it either.

We ALL know they're coming. We've been told 65000 at one point, not sure how much from that amount has been done and what is left. How about write a story about how many H1Bs are taking jobs from Americans in their own backyard. Why do companies have so many H1B's when there are plenty of Americans to do the same job.
