Why did I get cut?

I always performed, had been at Dell many years, did my leader not like me?

Has nothing to do with any of that. You were cut because its all about money. So Dell makes a saving by cutting you. Count your lucky stars that you now get away from the awful management of Dell. Some id--t telling you how to manage your career...and they can barely spell their own name. Bullsh-t place

I reckon it is one of the following...

1 You are over 50 and therefore they wanted to get rid of you and replace you with younger talent.
2 You are a high earner
3 You were not visible enough

What I realised at dell is that you need to be visible and be seen by everyone. You need a strong brand to get anywhere. I have been trying to get promoted and progress through the presales ranks... it just isn't happening.

Here is why...

Managers know who they will hire before the req is out.
They only hire people they know
If you are white, you got a better chance of progressing
If you are from an ethnic minority, be prepared to face the challenges
There is one rule for them and one for you.

Actually I have seen that people who are 65+ and Dell EMC veteran are experts in playing politics and being passive aggressive. They dont fit into this progressive world. They think their actions are above any criticism. They get people fired if you point out that they were the reason for delay in deliverables.
These people work in the shadows. Nobody dares speak about it.

Like the other commenter said you're white, over 50 and in too senior a role making too much money. I was let go in 2020. In 2021 they had exactly the same position and responsibilities posted but at an engineer level instead of principle engineer level. It's all about the money. They can hire three of you in Taiwan for the same resource cost.

it's nothing about performance. Just think about future with new chance. I am in a position that I like to be laid off. I have been with this company for long time and just want to see challenges for finding new job and current market.

To the commentator who said they refer their employee to their connections, my mgr said he cant refer me, as it is against dell policy. So he was lying then ?

"I've been in your bosses position. Sometimes as the previous poster noted, it's "make your staffing fit this budget or else I will do it for you..." Horrible situation. If I couldn't find a home for a good person in my division I have actually used my connections to let others know we "had to" let go of some great talent. Budgetary downsizing is always a last resort, and a sign of some serious trouble. I hope you will land on your feet soon, the cream always rises to the top. Stuff like this is just hard."

Don't go thinking this is a bad thing, yes, it's disorienting at the moment, but, time will show that this is the best thing that ever happened to you.

Its not anything you did or couldve done. It was likely either:

  1. Youre white and 50 or older
  2. You made too much money

Take this as a blessing and you will no doubt land on your feet in a better place

Having sit in positions that have had to make these kinds of choices in the past the best advice I can give is don't take it personal. Managers HAVE to pick people. And sometimes everyone on a team can be doing good and so many intangible things come into play with who is selected. Other times the manager may not get to choose at all. They may be given a list from higher ups and be told, this is the list, no exceptions. The bigger pitcture is unfortunately in a corporation you are a number on a spreadsheet. And the company may decide that number needs to be removed for some financial reason that has nothing to do with you personally. It su-ks because you can do everything right and still lose. That is why you should never give more loyalty to a company than they give to you, which is none.

I have see. Strong correlation between lower performance and high cost that drove people outside.

Never just one

And yes, making quota that was set low isnt going to cut it

Most often it's financial. You could have made the most of anyone on your team, or made an amount that fell in line with how much $ needed to be cut. Almost every time it has nothing to do with your performance and most everything with money
