Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Why is everybody trying so hard to do as little as possible?

I've been at Ford for a year and the thing I realized without a doubt is that laziness is part of the culture. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the impression I've gotten in the last twelve months. It's a wonder the company is not doing worse than it is, in my opinion.

@2cxj Doing the work of 2-3 people is not appreciated.

I watched one women literally do the work of the whole team. She worked 7 am - 7 pm everyday for years on end to keep up, while the rest of the team sat and twirled. The supervisor kept piling the work on. When I was promoted to LL6 and was in the yearly rate and compensate meetings, I was disgusted by how the LL6 talked about the women. Comments like “Well if she is doing the work, anyone could do it” and “Someone needs to be the janitor”. I took her out to lunch and convinced her to work at max 8 hours a 4 days a week and to let all the work pile up and fall on the floor, only doing the high vis work and taking 1 day a week to do self training. She got her personal life back and found a better career at another company.

Do not fall for the I gotta do the work of 2-3 people. You will not be appreciated.

You said to correct you if you are wrong. You are wrong. Glad you're in Happyland with your honeymoon period, but a lot of people work hard because there is no choice....many have been cut and some employees have been doing the work of 2-3 people.

As far as those who don't, there is only the culture of fear to blame. When you fear getting laid off at every turn, it's hard to be upbeat and dedicated.

Either way, come talk to us after you have a few years in.

Because Ford doesn’t necessarily reward the hardest workers.

They mostly promote DEI candidates even if they aren’t qualified.

Fords quality numbers paint this picture and I believe it is only going to get worse.

How “hard” are people supposed to work? I hear this same tripe in relation to any business that’s union, and it’s never based on something tangible.

  • Are the employees supposed to never take off of work?
  • Never attend their children’s life events?
  • Work OT all the time, even if it’s not needed?
  • Run around and exhaust themselves so another component is pushed out a fraction of a second faster?

What’s DOES it mean to work harder? Faster? Sacrifice? Over work themselves?

@eeu+1o64AOMn. I am glad you have a work ethic. Unfortunately, your work ethic is useless because the management of Ford is comically inept. What percent of competent Ford employees actually believe in management's direction? A lack of interest in spinning their wheels isn't laziness. It is a rational reaction.

Wait until you work at Ford longer than a year or two before chiming in.
Have you even been through more than one reorg and one round of layoffs?
How many new Supervisors and Managers have you been through.
How many Directors have you been through?
How many CEOs have you been through?
How many changes in "Business Culture and Culture Focus" have you been through?

Just for the record. In reply to @eeu+1o64AOMn. In 2021 I took the 6 months and lump sum and left. The site wouldn't post my first reply because it would have hurt your feelings, which is another problem these days.

@ets. Spot on. Out of 32 years I was a top performer 12 times and promoted to TS And always mentored and passed on my knowledge. I actually gave a damn about Ford and Ford racing. Nasser was the beginning of the end and he spun off many of the divisions. Mullaly was the only good CEO. Hacket was an id--t and Farley is a super narcissistic a-s. I was forced retired last August. All they had to do was follow Toyotas business model.

It's not laziness. As the first commenter days, when morale is in the toilet, engagement is too. And the rest of employees that do as little as possible because they don't see the point.

Hard to be motivated when you have no idea if you will be around in a month. When you see top performers being walked out, you begin to question how much effort you should put in.

Some of us have a work ethic and will continue to try to do the job we're paid to do in spite of the circumstances. If employment at Ford is untenable for you then you should do yourself a favor and leave.

What you are witnessing is the demoralization of a once proud workforce. I hired into Ford in 1990 after 8 years of putting in applications to Ford only to be told I would be on file for a year. 1982 was a bad time for auto companies. In 1989 Ford started hiring salaried people in Dearborn again. Back then, people were very happy to be working at Ford. In my opinion, the decline in morale started with Jack Nasser. People could see that things were changing for the worse. Poor management decisions were the cause of declining morale with only a short boost with Mulally. Constant layoffs, cuts in benefits and undeserved promotions have plagued this company ever since. People with pensions pending are tired of the BS and can't wait to retire. The people hired with no pensions have no incentive to stay. The company looks at employees as liabilities who's jobs can be sent overseas. Today you have Farley saying the employees are no good and can't be trained. What a leader he is... This all electric mentality will be the demise of this once great American company. Thanks Billy...
