That might be what he's trying to do, the only problem is we're not all that competitive in this businesses he wants us to focus on. All signs suggest it's a failed approach.

Chase has been expanding their branches.

Maybe Charles wants Wells to be like Citi? Purely an east/west coast focused bank, heavy into trading and investment banking, and phase out traditional services/products like mortgage/auto/retail banking etc

At this point in time, branches exist to serve the following two types of non-business customers:

  • The elderly
  • Hispanic 'migrant workers' that send money and peanuts back home. Their non-citizen status makes traditional banking a challenge

That's pretty much it.
