Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How’s XOM doing in Qatar

Qatar used to be a huge deal for us but it’s all Guyana and Permian now. How are we doing in Qatar?

Sheesh. The LDS hating guy is back. I’ve never understood why some churches spend more time teaching lies about other churches instead of just teaching the doctrine of their own church.

This person got it right. Good luck passing your screening interview!

Still a huge cash machine for the corporation. They are very selective about who they send there as they don’t want to mess up the relationship that has taken decades to build. Those sent are selected based on not only ability but behaviors. They have to not only impress the company but also impress the Qataris who have final say. Many are rejected by the Qataris after an interview. If you know someone who has worked there you likely understand what I mean. Not all are HiPos but there aren’t any slackers being sent to Qatar.

None of the people I know who have worked in Qatar were LDS. I’ve never worked there but know plenty of people who have.

I am much more concerned by the A&M alumni unfairly helping each other. They even have a company funded club on campus sponsored by an executive to help them advance and protect each other

I would bet money there are more employees in Qatar who don’t practice any religion than there are LDS. Or who say they are a particular religion but never attend and don’t donate any of their time or money to said religion.

Funny to me that there have been many changes in senior leadership in Qatar yet people still convince themselves the LDS are preferred by the new LCM. Isn’t the new LCM Muslim? His name sounds like he could be.

Right. The university we don’t even recruit from anymore is the one we should all be afraid of because they have so much power in the company. Check your facts.

In general LDS are good candidates for expat roles as most of them have lived overseas in far more challenging conditions as part of their church missionary program. HR data also shows they don’t have as many issues when on assignment that cost company money like asking for early demobilization or family members changing their mind and having company pay to ship them back to their home country early.

As a percentage LDS are a very small percentage of the expat workforce in Qatar.

Please share an example of how women are suppressed? I have a coworker who worked there five years ago any speaks highly of it. No mention of being suppressed. She isn’t LDS.

And here I thought the LDS employees adjusted easily to Qatar because they don’t drink alcohol, smoke, frequent La Quinta, fo------e, commit adultery, etc

Qataris are the most corrupt and lying people of people who claim to be open minded; racist and women rights suppression abound; xm seconded have to embrace this behavior, that is why most seconded are LDS because they have been there done that since the 1880s. The answer is so obvious but most won’t speak the truth at risk of offending xom leadership or the Qataris.

How is it in 2025?

EM has passed on some of the recent deals because the financials weren’t as good as what could be obtained elsewhere. This has strained the relationship with Qatar.

I have a different take than others here. Reason I think Qatar demographics are what they are is due to what it is like to live in Qatar. They are very strict on morality in Qatar. Many people aren’t interested in living in Qatar due to this.

current leadership only sponsors backstabbing upwardly focused people or LDS religion. Not a winning environment. Anyone who doesn’t fit this mould have left with the good people gone. Culture starts at the top.

Current leadership in Qatar can’t sell water in desert. We are losing in Qatar as our LNG org has lost its ability to negotiate and influence. Partnering with QP in US LNG isn’t enough, need to do more. We are losing Bigly in LNG. Rex knew how to negotiate, G&PM had strong folks who knew what they were doing, now it’s a meh show

EMs relationships are not as strong anymore with the Qataris. HIPos are focused at selling a deal internally, power pointing and justifying their existence but not so good at relationships despite what they say. The work environment can be pretty toxic especially with some teams there.

I heard we missed out on a deal for a cr--ker because the Qataris didn’t like the EM person sent. Somebody about a conflict of interest.
