Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

It’s happening… we’re returning to campus for 4 days, if not 5!

The powers that be have officially voted… they are going to require us to return to and work from the office 4 days a week, if not 5! Hoping that they incentivize somehow, with free lunches or something.

How is this going to affect your life? Leave your comments!

Oh right, I forgot one more sign of how unplugged SEC’s taskmasters are.

Their work tracking software is windows only. 90% of Nike’s software engineers are on mac’s.

I love running a VM just to access a poor man’s jira.

SEC is such a top-down joke. I love watching it constantly crash and burn.

Delivery dates given by decree without any input from the people doing the work.

Silo’s all over the place, no one talks or plans with anyone (makes sense given the work is being driven with a god’s ego & 1000’ view).

They hired the cheapest QA contractors in India that don’t understand how the systems used to work nor how they should work.
I get called into 6 meetings for every issue; where the same thing gets said on-repeat and the solution was described (and ignored) in the first 30 minutes.

They don’t even use jira, forcing everyone to individually request the creation of a separate account in their own one-off incident/work tracking system.

SEC isn’t going to be delivered on time because they never worked with the people working on it.

No one is going back to office. Nike can start renting those new buildings or maybe start housing Portland’s growing homeless population on the campus.

@9vfo+1oGfN6te - In last two years, SEC started delivery because of RL pushing the leaders and making them accountable. Prior to that tech leadership was non-existent on SEC

Has anyone else heard we will be asked to be in-person in the office Mon through Thu starting in January 2024? I am hearing it from a growing number of people on campus.

@8lve not sure how you’re coming to your conclusions about remote not working using SEC as an example. It’s the opposite. Prior to remote SEC was in a death spiral missing deadline after deadline and hemorrhaging money. In the last 2ish years they were able to deliver some massive go-lives and get on track to actually finish this thing. They are still mostly remote and continue to deliver better than they did when in office full time.

Do you have examples of those 25 year old DEI hires?

@ 3qhf

Did you just start at Nike, or have you been asleep the last 3 years? We’ve ALREADY lost some of our most talented people because of the forced hybrid model (and other company mismanagement). That’s why you see the company in shambles today: they backfilled critical roles with 25 year old DEI hires.

no one on my team has missed a delivery in a year now. Leadership needs to deal with the lazy jagoffs individually instead of blaming WFH, lo and behold it doesn't happen due to bias and favoritism.

@8lve+1oGfN6te those orgs were a shitshow before remote too. the real culprit is cheap a-s offshoring and leaders playing musical chairs

Remote work will go away, replaced with hybrid. For large companies like Nike, remote is creating lot of missed deliveries. SEC, EDA, GAP, Planning are few examples

Remote work is here to stay. Look at the remote nature of recruiting/hiring in 2023… No material impact on bottom line/sales.

Thank you, but NO. We are not going to go back to office until the stock price is above $150. That’s when my stock options are in positive

by

Post ID: @4dee+1oGfN6te

What justifies a full RTO? Because I said so isn’t good enough. Because I make 8 bajillion a year and have hired help who run my household and take care of my family isn’t good enough. Because I don’t care about wasted hours commuting back and forth or wasted gas money isn’t good enough. Because I believe in flexibility for myself but not for everyone else isn’t good enough. Because I don’t believe data showing that engagement and productivity improves with a flexible work model isn’t good enough. Because that’s how we’ve always done things in the past isn’t good enough. Why?

I'm one of the full remote guys. Above average performance reviews, get my deliverables out ahead of time, use my spare WFH time to stay online in case others need help. I'm not going to whack off about being a top performer but I do know I'm above the median.

I have years worth of money in the bank. Full remote is what keeps me at NIKE. If they want me gone, they are more than welcome to do it, but I'll stand my ground on unemployment and severance like many others will.

80% of Execs report regretting doing an RTO because they not only lost their high performers they also lost more employees overall than their soft layoff projected vs. doing a formal one. If they want to fu-k around and find out, it's no skin off my back. I can search for years and I know it won't take that long 🤷‍♂️

Nike follows trends set by other major Fortune 500 employers. The trend right now is getting people back in the office as much as possible. We’ve seen numerous headlines lately of “XXXX is now requiring its employees to come back to the office.”

Working from home does mostly work and it’s definitely preferable for most employees. But it would be disingenuous to claim that absolutely nothing is lost when most people are working remote.

There are three important variables here: Right now the economy is either heading towards or may even already be in a recession. That means the company-employee relationship will change to where employers have more leverage than they’ve had in recent years. Second, Nike is in an innovation and product slump, further increasing pressure to “get things back to where they were”. That would include people returning to the office. Third, a few years ago Nike invested more than $1 billion building out the campus. They didn’t do that to facilitate people working from someplace other than the campus.

Those three factors, and I’m sure others, contribute to Nike wanting “rear-ends in seats”. Covid did in fact change work dynamics and showed that working remotely can suffice IF ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. But I think in recent years we all saw too many “Work has forever changed!” news stories and convinced ourselves that it really would be a permanent shift.

Ultimately however “the man” is in charge, just as has always been the case. And “the man” wants people back in offices because that is to his benefit. We’ll lose a few people but make no mistake about it, there aren’t going to be large-scale defections because people have to return to the office. Almost everyone needs to work and to be completely honest there aren’t many other employers in the region that would be an “upgrade” from working at Nike. Despite what you read on this website most employees are well aware of this.

I’d prefer to work from home as much as possible but I thought the day would probably come when things went back to the way they were.

JD and MM must be shown the door immediately. Along with their cronies.

However, I’m excited to see both of their LinkedIn roles as “Lead” after they get fired because they won’t be managing anyone except for themselves.

Post ID: @3ajc+1oGfN6te

nke laid off it’s top HR talent. while scarce, there were good reasonable people who challenged MM and got shown the door over the past 3 years. A few good ones left but they’re getting more quiet because MM can’t handle any resistance at all. Her way or the Highway. She’ll still be working from home half time, she’s said so herself

@2fap total bs. The only way that would happen is if a reorg moved those remote people into new roles.

Source is anonymous, because no one wants to out their head out. Remote employees that are valuable, will get exception, rest will have to make decision. This is soft layoff. Let them fire you so you at least get severance.

Su-k it up guys. You did this pre-covid. If you are too concerned, there are many companies hiring remote and hybrid workers.

Too bad for teams that were fully remote for part 3 years and now needs to show their faces in office and continue to pretend they are busy working, EDA, GAP, Martech in technology.

Hilarious that JD’s strategy of turning us into a technology company doesn’t quite work or make sense and all of a sudden it’s “everyone needs to be back in the office!”. The truth is that we won’t be able to get to the next chapter with him at the helm. He needs to go and every second he’s not gone is a second too much. If board members don’t see this either, then PK needs to get rid of them as well

I can’t understand the “quit your bi--hing” argument.

“Yeah! Quit your bi--hing and spend less time with your family, more money in childcare, and more time contributing to corporate America!”

How dense are you that you see freedom from corporate America as a bad thing?

@1vrs+1oGfN6te Nike preaches equality and equity. Some if us going to the office had no choice. Those on the remote pilot didn't choose it. D-mb luck. So, hey, time to rotate if nothing else. You want it for yourself? Want it for everyone. What? Those shoeing up in the office are stronger than you? Better than you? Apparently.

@Yawn If you are happy and productive working in the office 4-5 days a week, that’s great. Your experience is not everyone’s experience. That’s ok and that’s the beauty of hybrid. It’s not one size fits all.

So, how fragile were your relationship, home life, health before covid that you are so broken you cannot return to the office?

Those of you who have now been 100% remote, how do you make 100% remote work for all? Frankly, it has been a pain in the backside trying to get work done with you who never come to the office.

Don't like it? Leave. Go find a job that will support your fragility.

3 or 4 days in the office has been fine, even enjoyable, for so many of us who had already been forced back.

Come on. Just do it. Give yourself more credit for being resilient and flexible.

To answer your question: my physical and mental health will decline, my relationship with my wife and children will lessen, my work productivity will decline, my carbon footprint will increase and I’ll have to adjust my budget for small jobs around the house and transportation

But good news is that I’ll get to hear hours of chatter about fantasy football from people that mean nothing to me! Thanks Nike!

Heard this too.

Remote roles will remain remote but no new roles will be open as remote. So essentially you will be stuck in your current role. Heard will be activated after the holidays.

F&A doesn’t attract top talent either. Longest time, we have been churning out horrible products, only saving grace is they are cheap quality so our consumers end up buying more of it.
