FORD “PAUSING” CONSTRUCTION OF MARSHALL BATTERY PLANT

From the Detroit News:

Ford Motor Company has halted construction of a $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant project in the Marshall area, a company spokesman confirmed Monday.

"We're pausing work, and we're going to limit spending on construction at Marshall until we're confident about our ability to competitively run the plant," Ford spokesman T.R. Reid told The Detroit News on Monday.

Reid said a "number of considerations" were at play in the company's business decision, but wouldn't say whether the United Auto Workers' ongoing strike was a factor.

“We haven’t made a final decision about the investment there," Reid said of the Marshall site.

The Ford spokesman said the pause in construction is effective Monday.

The 2.5-million-square-foot battery park was to be run by a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford called “Blue Oval Battery Park Michigan.” The plant would employ 2,500 people with pay ranging from $20 to $50 an hour.

Ford planned to license battery technology from China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., or CATL — the world's leading LFP battery maker — but CATL would not receive state tax incentives, Ford officials told lawmakers.

The Dearborn-based automaker announced on Feb. 13 that it planned to invest about $3.5 billion in an electric vehicle battery plant park in Marshall. As part of the deal, Ford secured about $210 million in direct tax incentives plus a 15-year property tax abatement worth about $775 million over the life of the tax break.

There was also roughly $750 million set aside for site prep at the location, with $299 million set aside for the local economic development organization and $330 million pushed toward the Michigan Department of Transportation budget.

Under the original deal with Ford, the Marshall Area Economic Development Alliance assumed responsibility of site preparation of a large tract of farmland west of Marshall for the battery manufacturing park.

The Ford battery plant in Marshall was one of four cornerstone projects around which lawmakers and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, in 2021, built the state's incentive program, the Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve Fund.

The project was met with some pushback from the community, which opposed the behind-the-scenes negotiations that landed the deal, questioned the use of agricultural land for the project and expressed concerns about Ford’s relationship with CATL to obtain the battery technology to be produced at the factory.

I'd say the wheels are getting put back on. Maybe they figured out EV's are a partial solution, priced high with limited sales potential. Piston engines in smaller sized cars won't drive millions of tons of metal ores to be mined to meet demand. That's from mines that aren't built yet.

Ford leadership only put a pause on the project. Wow, you people get over excited. There is nothing wrong with re-evaluating the business and the plan for a nominal amount of time.

Nothing better for coal than an EV battery plant!

Given that EV sales are not even close to forecasted, EVs losing money on every sale and the UAW new contract, I bet the next announcement will be the second KY BlueOval SK battery plan will be put on hold.

What time was this announced on Monday? Before or after the Town Hall?

They probably paused construction so the 2,500 potential jobs won't be part of any UAW deal.

Nothing wrong with testing your business model against evolving commodity and materials costs. Getting it right is pretty important, and this would likely be one of the most strategic decisions to be made in decades.

I believe this is false news reporting. If this were remotely true, our leadership would have discussed this matter in today's Town Hall.

Don't put much into media spins that are out to attack Ford at every turn.

You'd think they would tell us about this in the Town Hall that happened just this morning. Why even bother doing Town halls?

The wheels have fallen off a long time ago. Ford don't want to let the public know about it.

So, we spent millions of taxpayer money tearing up pristine farmland, but now we changed our mind. Like the AM radio thing, but a thousand times worse for the residents of the Marshall, Michigan residents.

A Model e team decision.
