Laid off employees ineligible for rehire?

I was laid off last year in the summer during the CBB reorg. I was a top performer for years and have an impressive resume. Since then, I’ve gone through interviews for four roles, making it to the final stage, but I’m not selected for every single one which makes me wonder if there’s something on my file that’s making me ineligible for rehire at the last second. Now I’m done applying with these f_ckers after giving them my blood and sweat for ten years, and the fact that they email me to tell me I didn’t get the job just tells you how sh---y of a business they’re running here.

The 2022 CBB Layoffs were particularly nasty because it hit a large number of people but almost every person laid off was required to receive an interview, even though Mgmt knew they didn’t have enough jobs for everyone affected.

Employees interviewed but Mgmt held off providing updates as they twisted in the wind for over a month after interview.

If recruiters can’t get feedback from Mgmt, they can’t help the candidates even if they want to. No recruiter wants to string candidates along, but U.S. Bank hiring teams especially in CBB often don’t partner with HR or work in good faith with those affected because they lay off people every year.

You’d think they would have a set procedure and process for RIF’s but CBB changes it every time.

The vast amount affected by those CBB layoffs/reorg were treated very badly by Mgmt but those ‘lucky’ enough to be hired back, many had to accept demotions for less pay, just to stay employed.

CBB also had layoffs in Q1 and Q2 of 2023.

“Eligible for rehire” is a nice way of saying “strung along while missing opportunities elsewhere.”

It’s all about “friends and family” at USB, not about who is qualified. Just look at Portland lockbox,,,the most recent leaders hired are friends of friends, etc and we get stuck with incompetent leaders who are completely clueless. One of the managers was fired from a branch for a code of ethics violation, but her friend brought her back. Then she was free to bring along her friends. HR doesn’t give a cr-p,

The exact same thing happened to me after being laid off July 22 after 30 yrs with the company. I was a top performer and folks with less experience were hired over me. I even made it to the final round of interviews and then was completely ghosted by the recruiter and hiring manager. I agree that Nepotism is rampant. I finally had to move on because if I was rehired I wouldn’t be able to trust that it wouldn’t happen again.

Why not find a new employer—likely that you would get a salary increase/reset to market rates. Then pull others from USB with you, handicap USB in a tough labor market, secure raises for all and be a hero.

Nepotism is rampant here. Qualified applicants are looked over in favor of friends. Unless your under the right desk your chances of getting hired are low.

In my opinion, the eligible for rehire is a page from the playbook in diffusing emotions in connection with the separation, when in reality most are not actually eligible for rehire, as the company would not rehire them but there is no restriction on their former employee file that would indicate such

It’s the buddy system. Both from the hiring and referral/ feedback. The hiring manager will hire their buddy regardless of the input, or a buddy will refer the person that they will hire.

Do you have that Buddy?

In the banking industry - you are expected to work somewhere else like another bank before coming back - this is the industry norm and I been around 25 years in the banking sector - that's just the way it works.

Being “let go” is not the same as being “laid off”. If you were ineligible for rehire you’d be dispositioned before you got to an interview. Pretty sure your candidate profile would not be able to advance in Workday if that was the case. If you are applying for a different line of business and getting to the final round then I doubt your former manager’s input is a factor. There are all sorts of possible reasons and unless you request feedback from the hiring manager who didn't hire you then you’ll never know.

But here’s the bigger question. Why in the world would you want to go back to that toxic and dysfunctional sinking ship of a bank? The way you are/were treated like not getting the courtesy of a phone call to let you know you weren’t selected as a finalist candidate should tell you everything you need to know. USB is not a destination for anyone who wants to do great things in their career. Take it for the blessing it is and bring your talents to a company who will invest in you where you can grow and advance. Good luck!

The first question you need to answer to yourself is why you were go in the first place - who had it in for you? Also, keep in mind that any manager wishing to hire you is a phone call away from the manager who let you go, and now your former manager has to choose between admitting he was an 1d1ot for letting you go or claiming he was fully justified to do it, what do you think is going to happen? If you really love your former job despite being let go, you can probably grovel to your former manager & colleagues, who may eventually re-hire you under onerous conditions. The better way out of all this is to give the finger to your former employer and move on with your life. Good luck.
