Forget about taking a PIL or a PIP.

The smart ones like me are taking a PO-P, which is much more gratifying than taking a PIL or a PIP.

Really depends on you and your work group.

If you want to stay and Exxon and your group is not reducing headcount, there is a strong possibility that you can pass the PiP and most likely will find yourself in the Good or Very Good bucket next year.

If you don't want to stay, take the PIL and go on with life. If unsure, then take the PiP and look for a job and if the right one comes along, take it. If your group is trying to reduce headcount, there is probably a pretty good chance you won't pass the PiP so go ahead and take the PIL.

Take the PIL. Once a person reaches the NSI level, nothing short of a miracle will bring them back to the fold. And when's the last time you witnessed a miracle where you work? Even if a person passes the PIP, it's very unlikely any manager will stick their neck out to offer support in the future. The PIP is like a life-saving flotation device thrown out to you but it's attached to a very frayed rope.

Unless you have a job in hand, take the PIP and use the time to look for another job. That way, if it takes longer than 3 months to find another job, you are covered. If you do find another job before the 3 months are out, then take the PIL.

Either way, your career at ExxonMobil is effectively over or at least plateaued, but if you take the PIP, you have a chance to have more time to find another job while still having an income.

In the UK, performance feedback is given in September. If that helps! So this may be real although UK folks don’t get the option of a PIL, only the PIP.

I would consider your long term goal. If you can retire in a year or two, try and pass the PIP. If not, start looking for a job and saving money incase you want to quit before having another job to go to.

PIL = payment in lieu

That means, the company ranked you in the very bottom during a performance review (also known as the “need significant improvement” (NSI) category.) Chances are, it wasn’t deserved or properly communicated in advance. Chances also are that you have been a loyal, committed employee that has been with the company for a decade or more, and are over 50. You’re humiliated and given the option of a PIL (3 months salary) which you can take and immediately leave the company.

Or, you’re presented the option of a PIP = personnel improvement plan; which is a 3-month probation. At the end, if you pass, you keep what you have been brainwashed to believe is an amazing job, with an amazing company. In a few months, the “review” cycle starts again, and you’re likely again a target because once you drop in ranks - it’s virtually impossible to go back up. If you fail the PIP, you are immediately terminated.

It’s a fact, EM has been reducing headcount, so has been disguising layoffs under the NSI process to avoid paying their employees better separation packages. With an NSI, they’re telling you it’s YOUR performance, when in reality - it’s THEM. How’s that for actively caring?

ExxonMobil is diabolical and all the managers that don’t see that and subscribe to this dehumanizing treatment of their employees (our most valued asset, my a-s) will get their comeuppance at some point in life. What goes around, comes around.

Once you are NSI it is very rare to rank well. Recommend PIL. If this isn’t your first NSI definitely take the PIL.

Why is this question being asked now? Weren’t PIPs and PILs handed out in June / July?

Is this another wave?
