GM cuts 200 engineers, let's then apply for other jobs

Amazing, a company actually treating their employees with respect. Rather than "you were valuable before but now you're not, and you can never work here again!"

These weren’t “engineers”, they were managers and above. There’s no way all of them will find jobs. There’s nothing humane about this.

Impossible to find a job at GM in 3 months. The jobs they have posted don't match the skills sets of the folks who were given notice to find new jobs. You would need to get a degree in Woke Culture, within 3 months.

It's just PR fluff. We'll let you apply for other jobs except there are no jobs open to apply for.

@dio+1oaoCzPc Still infinitely better than how Ford handles it. Then treats the laid off employee like a criminal by immediately removing their access. GM is at least treating them like the trusted employees they are.

When my buddy got SIRP'd last August his access was cut within minutes of his "see ya wouldn't want to be ya" meeting. He went from trusted employee one moment to, "we have to cut his access right now lest he steal all our secrets" the next. Ford is not a family.

Yeah, right, they have until Nov. 1 to find new jobs before getting canned (you can read about it on the GM part of this website). It's very unlikely many (if any) will be able to meet that deadline.

@OP before you idolize GM, a proper well run company sits down and finds positions to relocate its employees to that fit their aptitude and skill set. A company that is just cutting costs and doesn’t really give a hoot about their employees publicly Says your job is gone, you are free to apply for other positions in the company, while privately behind the scenes ensures the employees aren’t qualified for any of the positions they apply for.
And yes there was shuffling of employees before the announcement.

If you were let go under the SIRP program, you can’t come back - period. Not as consultant, contractors, or agency/purchased service. Language is very clear in the severance agreement. Yes, I know some favorite sons or daughters come, but that is if the left under the very rare early retirement program which happens maybe once every 5 years.

I agree this would be a very common sense thing to do. Got too many ICE engine & transmission engineers? Make them software engineers instead, working on the in vehicle tech or the battery tech. Then again Ford has not been known to make much of any sense, common or otherwise!

The "you can't work here ever, unless it's as a consultant or contact/agency" thing is so asinine. Which also makes it par for the course.
