Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Bill of Material Quality?

As I understand it, most/all of the company's Dearborn-based BOM experts have either been let go or retired.

There has to be some negative Plant/Supplier/Build repercussions eventually- possibly massive. Or am I worrying needlessly?

@1zlg+1ocAqp9u They didn't. Many of the good BOM people were 20+ year employees which were in the crosshairs for layoffs.

As someone who used to be on that team, it was really unfortunate to see so many people disappear in people finder after the last round of layoffs. Definitely lots of knowledge lost and the replacements won't stand a chance without proper guidance and someone to fix their mistakes. So many issues can come from bad BOM and MDM practices...

I hope that they at least kept a few of their top experts and specialists around for troubleshooting, resolving difficult issues, developing new software and systems, etc..

They've been purging BOM experts for years. I can't tell you how many times their skills saved a whole lot of errors from happening during prototype and launch. They kept the engineers on track and saved sooo much time by heading off issues early in the project. In minutes they could research several systems and answer a question real time during a phone call or meeting. If you're trying to keep quality, these folks are not the ones to get rid of. Another bonehead move by Ford that shows they have no idea how the work gets done.

I worked at all 3 Detroit OEM's... when I was at the one in Auburn Hills they had a course for the release engineers where the teacher tells you that getting the parts right on the BOM is key.... I predict many issues with the binder approach.

@1phj

No company that I worked with in the past will and can stand behind the "binder approach" and you know why.

The non-US employees that are getting our US jobs are given a binder with all of our design rules, lessons learned, specs, etc. to follow. So according to our rocket scientist executives as long as somebody can read and follow the binder they are just as good is the experienced employees that they are getting rid of from the US. So don’t worry the top executives have got it figured out, get rid of experience and replace it by a binder for a big car safe. (why would they care? They make these decisions to come across is they know what they’re doing and load their pockets in the meanwhile. And once their decisions come to light how bad they sc--w up the company they are long gone and wealthy. No accountability.)
