Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

In case you still thought RTO was about collaboration…

My L4 explained the drawn out timing of the current layoff notices this way:

The company needed to see how many people refused to relocate as part of operation Pack Your Bags or GTFO. Once they had an idea of that number, they figured out how many more they needed to cut to get the to the level of ‘efficiency’ the business needed to achieve (I guess Stankey’s 15,000 number from his initial press comments).

To be clearer, from the start, the goals of this were to get as many people out as possible by having them ‘volunteer’ to not move and then use that as cover to make the next round of layoffs look smaller. Secondary goal was to offload some real estate and put butts in seats for what remains.

Additional unstated goals were making Stankey look like a big shot with his CEO friends in Sun Valley and maybe just maybe have a little more collaboration or efficiency or who knows.

But remember kids, this is a cost cutting exercise and nothing more, no matter what they say. And it probably isn’t over.

It's definitely cost-cutting - or "tax break saving." It wouldn't surprise me if the cities of Dallas, Atlanta, etc. have been telling the company they need to bring people back to their offices downtown or their tax breaks would vanish.

"Perhaps you were thinking of the superfluous 3-4 levels of “Vice Presidents” that rake in the $ for little (true, tangible) ROI."

Exactly.

L2s and L3s are the ones who get things out the door. You think a bunch a of wizards cast a spell and the new iPhone promos magically appear for example?

I truly don't know what my L4 actually does other than writing tons of decks to pass around to other VPs, asking L3s especially and L2s for slides for said decks and sitting in endless meetings to discuss said decks and dream up new ones that L3s and L2s have to scramble to build more slides for. It's the circle of Powerpoint! That single evil piece of software probably does more to keep execs employed than anything else.

Occasionally L4s actually make a decision on something like who should get the ax but it honestly seems like a crushingly boring job. No wonder some of them have seemed so clueless and out of touch through this whole RTO/layoff mess. I guess some of this adds value somewhere,

I'd take the paycheck though.

“to be honest i think all level 2 and level 3 managers should be gone. they add zero value to the company or our customers”

To the level 1 or bargained for employee who wrote this ... take my job for a week, then try re-writing this. But likely you'll be hiding under the covers.

“ Wow! Thanks for the insight, Captain Obvious. Gosh, your L4 sure does have the inside scoop”

Well considering all of genius comments on this site about George Soros, DEI, Costco trips, CBRE, little green men and other id--tic ‘reasons’ for RTO it seems like a lot of people don’t seem to get it.

This is cost cutting and a little ego trip for the brass, no more no less. They have just done this, obviously, in a manner that causes the most possible stress and distraction. They need better BS and euphemisms than efficiency because nothing has been very efficient of late.

FUNNY thing is, what is REALLY going to upset their calculations is ALL the people (rightfully so) that are saying they are staying(IE going to move) to buy themselves up to a year or more employment check. However, in actuality they are NOT going to move anywhere and will play that card at the very last minute! Perfecto!

Oh well! That’s why the C-Suite gets paid the BIG bucks to figure out a way out of that mess they created when that happens!

i had heard they needed about 25% to quit or retire and they only had 20%. still need 5% to cut.

Wow. So insightful. It’s not like it’s blatantly obvious or there’s not another 300 posts saying the same thing.
