Thread regarding Ford layoffs

UAW going to shoot itself in the foot

If the UAW goes on strike and sales are lost that will just speed up the transfer of market share to non UAW manufacturers.

This will lead to less work at the big 3 plants which will lead to less UAW membership. Which will lead to less bargaining power.

And if UAW members were smart, they wouldn't want a pension that takes 30 years to vest. They'd want a 401k with higher matching.

Whomever is advising them is not doing their best.

This UAW last show of force, Membership is at its lowest level in decades. Only formerly known as Big3 employ UAW. BIC Toyota, Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes, VW, etc. do not hire UAW personnel. The writing has been on the wall for many decades now, UAW is bad business. UAW has not evolved with time, it used to be good for the workers, but as usual Power corrupts and now it is a shadow of what it was before. Sad ending for an organization that made a difference in the fairness of working on the floor. I predict a weakened UAW after the negotiations, losing headcount in the next 5 years as well as getting meager salary increase. UAW leader should protect their current members and sacrifice Tier 2's. Big3 may introduce more strict rules, so UAW is no longer a shield to protects lazy workers. One option would be keeping stagnant current UAW membership getting some bones in salary increase but allowing Big3 to hire no UAW in new plants. The argument that JF and Billy made a lot of money is an old one, Big3 can swap salary increases by given them Ford or GM or Stellantis Stock. UAW has no skin in the game they need to feel that their can protect their job by doing a better job.
Like the battle of El Alamein during WW2, this is the end of the beginning for UAW, unfortunately UAW is willing to bring to bankruptcy to Big3 than compromise and get a better position for current membership. They should hire Trump for advice in the Art of getting a Deal.

I think there are compounding issues mainly do to inflation and higher cost of living and other issues highlighted in this video above. At the end of the day Ford can always file bankruptcy and actually restructure monument to optimize their business if they can't meet UAW demands OR cut out EV department drag and stop trying to sell in California.

The fix would be to eliminate foreign competition.

Problems:

  1. The average consumer/voter would then have to deal with paying prices for goods to support union wages. No politician wants to deal with that.
  1. Globalization and the dissolution of the American Culture are the prime objectives of the Regime, and untrammeled influx of foreign goods and citizens are key components. The Regime will not stand for it.

Maybe the strike will go as well for UAW as it is for the writers?

If the UAW is eating cr@p pies it's their own doing.

A 30 year pension for a job that won't be around that long isn't a better pie.

Expecting a pension and a 401k is not realistic. And while it may be cheaper for the company, one option to help the employees would be to increase theatch that the company provides.

So OP, the UAW should just keep eating cr-p pies like they have since 2009? You serious, Jones?

Emboldened by UPS strike? The last UPS strike was 25 years ago, I doubt that is emboldening anyone!

UAW is asking for the world, the problem is they are now pumped up and believing they deserve it and will get it. The power is with the companies here. UAW should be fighting for exit conditions as their ranks will be cut in half between EVs and moves to Mexico.

I disagree. Plus they are emboldened by the successful UPS strike.

OP: 401(k) was cheaper for Companies compared to Pensions which were better for most people.
The introduction of 401(k) gave them an excuse to drop pensions. 401(k) was never meant to be a replacement but an added benefit.
