Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Bad idea to laterally move?

I don’t like the job family I am in now and want to move to another job family within the company.

Would this put me on a list for layoffs or something?

It’s difficult to advise based on a few things. As others have said it depends on where you’re moving from and to. Do you have a good working relationship with your current leader and co workers? Do you feel respected in your current role? And the biggest “unknown” won’t be known until after the next round… How do they select those walked out? Prior to the last few layoff rounds your leaders “picked” who would be leaving. The last few rounds were apparently selected by a consulting firm based on criteria like years of service (do you have a pension), salary, job family. etc. If people are laid off based on the latter it doesn’t matter where you are.

I wouldn’t make that move at this time. The problem I see is that when you move, you have no ties with your new department, your coworkers and more importantly your manager. If cuts need to be made …. If you’re the ‘new’ guy…. You might as well just walk yourself out.

Where are you and where are you looking to move? Those details are mandatory in order to advise.

For instance, if you're in Ford Pro looking to move to PD? Bad move. If you're in CV, an area ripe for outsourcing, and see looking to move to Ford Pro, then that's a good move.

But to say, I want to move from my current area to a new area, should I? Is too vague to be able to advise you.
