Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

BUMP

company used to be very focused on product gross margins... it was in the50s/60s for a long time. Now it is well below 40%.

For the first time in decades, Intel has to worry about investing cash flows and SG&A... TBH, Intel isn't very good at running efficiently.

Is it a surprise that Intel is having such difficulty and generating such staggering quarterly losses... look at headcount. So far only about 10,000 have been cut. At a minimum the company needs to lose another 20,000 - 30,000 heads.

Intel used to be very good at right sizing the headcount to the business cycle... now it is woefully too slow and the cash bleed is staggering. I am losing faith.

That is part of it. In addition, I suspect Pat is trying to implement Andy's strategy of investing your way out of a recession.

That made sense when Intel had a growing business. Now x86 is in decline so, Pat keeping excess headcount will turn out very badly. He will be forced to cut the heads over next 4 quarters as PC demand fails to turn around.

Think about it, PC refresh cycle is 4-5 years. When $6T in stimulus money went out and governments forced workers to stay home, companies bought lots of machines. That demand rush is over. Now wait 5 years to have PC growth return...

The situation is quite dire at this point.

Keeping all this headcount… is it only because the optics for CHIPS Act would look terrible with mass layoffs while getting $$ for production?
