Any other managers been asked to rank the associates that work for them? I received a request today to rank the people who work for me from best to worst performer. No reason was given for the request so all I can think is that layoffs are on the way.

Ahh the popularity contest. Problem is that not everyone can be a 4 all the time and if the ranking is done on a down year for the poor schmuck then they are screwed. Most managers can’t look at the whole body of work.
Ah Stack Ranking like was done at WF. I was wondering when that would come here.
You will have a big problem stack ranking your execs. Who is the worst? Is it Tom, Geoff, Aditya or Sheri?
Completely normal and I bet someone ranked you as well. :-)
this is known as the “talent planning” process, which translates into year end ratings and corresponding variable compensation. the actual process places all employees on a matrix of exceeds, meets, does not meet, on both “what and how”.
top performers are then further ranked for comp purposes. once the ranking is done, it’s nearly impossible to change, so your rating for the year is pretty much locked in.
It is normal for this time of year... that's how managers know how to divide up that 2% budget for performance increases.
That is a normal request for mid-year reviews and title promotions around September timeframe.. it helps when most folks on the team perform similarly and they can’t give everyone the same ratings. No correlation to a layoff.
I would love to get a request to rank our leadership & executives from best to worst
What location was this and what department?
