Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Tesla going cellular with satellite, and Comcast will have 6 gig internet to the home using existing coax......

What has AT&T done in the advancement or growth of tech? We are getting blasted from all sides, and with nothing in place for technological development, I see AT&T as a dead man walking.

Satellite has limited reliability due to terrain and climate. The whole customer experience will be awful using satellite for communication. Not a sustainable path for success.

"AT&T offers 5 Gbps today in many cities. expanding to 70 cities by 2025.
we've hit 10 Gbps in the lab."

So the great stank managed to scrape up a few bucks to but a couple of Cisco or Infinera 10G switches. Do you realize the att backbone is OC-768 and has been for a while, right?

att is -not- a technology company anymore. They buy other manufacturers gear, wire it up, and sell it to customers. No real innovation doing that.

att has -not- been a technology company since the days of Bell Labs and Western Electric. This is one of many reasons why att is failing.

Wow, it's coming sooner than you think! https://direct.starlink.com/

Satellite texting coming in 2024, voice and data in 2025, and IOT in 2025.

AT&T is going to be s c r e w e d. My body is ready for you Starlink.

"TMo and Spacex will offer text messaging one day. And then voice and data later.
AT&T is partnered with AST to offer more."

That one day is coming sooner than you think. The mobility cash cow AT&T has relied on for so long will be no more. I know I'm switching to Starlink as soon as it's ready, and bringing my 8 lines with me. I will advise all my friends and family as well.

“I love when hourly union techs and people that work in retail stores come on this site and lament about AT&T’s technical abilities and what it does or does not innovate. You people are clueless.“

Exactly, what do they know about what innovations the company has brought out to the market. Those damn simpletons out there splicing fiber, turning up the equipment, installing cards that cost over 150k each. Those know nothing techs explaining to engineers what they screwed up again and what needs to be done to fix it. Those damn power techs working on plants pulling 6k amps on 20 year old controllers, engines that cost over a million dollars a piece and can support 2mw of load. They are nowhere as smart as management. Before you know it AI will still not be able to do those jobs. But the innovative managers sitting at their desk that all helped crunch imaginary numbers that got us in this mess will have to worry. AI can already make more coherent emails than most of the ones I get from management. Keep talking down to those that do the physical work to keep the network going. You may very well be one of those that will end up having to do physical work one day. Practice public speaking and proper diction. It will make it easier for people to hear you over the speaker. Practice “ would you like cheese on that, Would you like fries with that, and would you like to make that a meal with a large drink”.

If the fiber is cut to the cell tower a union tech will splice it. If the power is out a union tech will hook up a generator the list goes on. These union or non union techs are the ones that actually have to be here. Job security for as long as you show up. You should never think they’re not important because actually they are the most important. The network will run without you but not without them.

THIS

Let us examine an example.
Someone who works from home or remotely can copy a script and send it to a network element. Does not matter if the infrastructure has the fiber severed by the Water department or the Highway Department expanding the road. It WILL NOT WORK. There is no amount of work you can can do to resolve the problem. It will require a Union Tech to restore the connection.
Soon Satesh in India will be connecting though OOB to run the same script. Tank U vedy much...

seems pointless to have all this speed when you have to RTO.

Innovation? Satesh in India is waiting for a knowledge transfer. HE WILL GET IT. He has a questionable Degree, or none at all. He will have your job after you relocate to try to save yourself. You will have a new mortgage at 7.8% after you move your family and will be gone "due to needs of the business" within 6 months. I don't like it, but it is what AT&T is.

Show us the tech then. More importantly, start selling the tech. Oh wait, budget constraints are preventing the infrastructure buildout to deliver the tech. This pesky little thing of over a 125 Billion debt has kind of slowed that down a little.

10 Gbps "in the Lab" Kind of like how Air Gig worked "in the lab"?

AT&T offers 5 Gbps today in many cities. expanding to 70 cities by 2025.
we've hit 10 Gbps in the lab.
Comcast talks about 10 gig on their website, but most of their customers can only buy 1.2 gb today.

TMo and Spacex will offer text messaging one day. And then voice and data later.
AT&T is partnered with AST to offer more.

to pretend AT&T is a bunch of deadenders with not r&d is laughable when on the two examples you cite, we're actually winning.

Stop hyping up the competition’s brilliant leadership! We got Stankey and Legg! #stankeylegg We’re going to save billions of dollars in layoffs, well, hundreds of quarters after paying 6 months severance to thousands of employees and retrofitting newly leased office rentals, but we’ll go through the sofa cushions. We are also saving money by not buying spectrum with is only needed by telecommunications companies and we’re a “possibility company” so we just need smart people. But we’re getting rid of the smart people and hiring college grads who just want to get 2 years and get out. Excuse me, I gotta log into Fidelity and dump my AT&R shares.

And in case you were wondering, it’s obvious that you’re a bozo because you think things like satellite phones and 6gig internet and bleeding edge innovations.

This is bad news on all fronts, unfortunately...... AT&T has stagnated in its R&D and has focused more on how to make Wall Street and its shareholders happy by screwing its employees over, and over, and over again. I give AT&T 5 more years before it's completely dismantled and sold to other entities.
