Another EV Recall

When is a fix not a fix? When Ford is responsible to solve problem.

Ford Motor Company is recalling select 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E crossovers due to an issue with the High Voltage Battery Junction Box (HVBJB). This action follows a previous recall for an issue regarding the same model’s high voltage battery main contactors, which prompted an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) back in August.

The defect: in affected vehicles, the high voltage battery main contactors may overheat, which can result in a contactor that remains open or a contactor that welds closed.

The hazards: Some vehicles that have received the 22S41 software remedy will receive a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when resistance is measured higher than the threshold. Those vehicles will experience a reduction in vehicle power with an average of 50 percent of its rated power to prevent further damage to the contactors. The vehicle will still be able to accelerate to highway speeds safely with this power derate.

In some cases, the 22S41 remedy has not proactively detected damage to the contactors on Extended Range and GT vehicles. This can allow the contactor to weld closed or prevent the contactor from properly closing while driving. If the contactors weld closed while driving, upon the next key cycle, a MIL will be illuminated, vehicle diagnostics will set a DTC, and vehicle will not start.

If the contactors are prevented from closing while driving, vehicle diagnostics will set a DTC, a MIL will be illuminated, the vehicle will display “Stop Safely Now,” and the vehicle will immediately lose motive power. The vehicle will coast to a stop and all 12V systems including power brakes and steering will remain functional.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Components: High Voltage Battery Junction Box

Affected vehicles: select 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E models produced between May 27th, 2020 through December 23rd, 2021, along with 2022 Mach-E crossovers built between August 16th, 2021, and May 24th, 2022, at the Cuautitlan Assembly plant.

Number of vehicles affected: 30,013

The fix: dealers will receive a bulletin when parts ordering information and repair instructions will be available to support this safety recall.

Tesla is suddenly getting a wake up call on their stock, sales and general outlook. Stock is down, and market is waking up to the fact that the EZ money has been made already.

So the question to Farley, do you still wanna be the next Elon Musk?

@3fxt+1p8tghmT. Of course. The bottom line is that mobility is mechanical by definition. You can't have an out of touch leader sitting in his office in California directing a transformation to software solutions to an out of touch staff sitting in their basements. That is fine for Apple.

Gotta love it, Doug Fields “software defined vehicle” , software was applied and failed to fix the problem.

Look for class action lawsuit next.

Ford needs to stop making EVs that no one wants to buy.

To the last poster!

Exactly! This is the same Doug Field that botched the Model 3 at Tesla, then jumped ship before he could be blamed. My guess? In 2024 he'll be retiring to spend more time with family......

Model-e developed products under bunny face is the same team that developed mach-e and lightning called ese and team edison. No wholesale change of team members. Quit with misleading statements that model-E is some new team.

Back in the 1990s, when Ford engineered and produced a BEV version of the Ranger pickup, the company had the expertise to design a contactor box without these failure modes. I knew the engineers who worked on the contactors and high-voltage circuit protection, and they were brilliantly creative and very diligent about validating their designs. Sadly, most of that institutional knowledge was lost in a series of reassignments, layoffs, and retirements in the years between the Ranger EV and the Mach-E.

i wonder how many new-vision fluffy model-e types understand this:

wow man, cool stuff

Regarding the post cautioning about copyrights, wouldn’t it be best if we made vehicles that didn’t get recalled. Seems (to me) like a better solution.

Nice try. Mach-E is not a Model e developed product under DF's leadership. Mach-E was developed before he even came to Ford and before Model e organization was formed. Mach-E is more of a legacy Ford product.

With the next-gen Model e created BEV's, you will not expect to see issues like this.

@OP, copy pasting the whole articles might not be a smart idea, specially without naming a source. Your post might get deleted simply because the article itself is copyrighted. Rather quote a couple of sentences and paste a link.

Not parking one of these in my attached garage. Are your smoke detector batteries up to date?
