How long does it take to become a complex engineer ?

Please forgive if this sounds harsh, but why aspire to the complex engineer job? Used to be that people could get to CL 27/28 in those positions and make it to retirement. In todays world, your on a path to a mid career PIP. The only people who advance from those positions are sponsored PhD types who are dipped there for 18 months to punch their plant experience card before moving up on their predetermined path. Personally I have nothing but admiration for many of our complex engineers who have incredible experience, work harder than anyone, and are often the only ones keeping our plants running. But the company absolutely does not see it that way.
How fast can you unzip pants (yours or theirs)?
Typically about 4-6 years at the site. If from KLTC, 2 years.
Ascending from a mere simple engineer to one of complexity requires first and foremost mastering the art of untangling headphones. Only then, you shall truly be ready.
Over 25 years at EM and I am still a Simple Engineer.
What’s with EM and these weird job titles with “engineer” appended to them?
Most engineering firms have titles/grades that any reasonable person could make sense of (associate, staff, senior, etc.). When I see some weird title on an engineer’s CV I assume they weren’t doing any technical work and I stop reading.
Zero experience is required to be a complex engineer even if you have never punched your ticket as a process engineer.
All you need is to be sponsored by the right executive(s).
At EM you'll develop a complex within 5 years.
No need to apply. They are sending all engineering overseas. Only jobs left that pay well are fls. Let me warn you though. It’s a tough rank group. Must be able to lie, steal and abuse people better than anyone yet in upper level meetings act humble and innocent especially along the Mississippi River

Only simple engineers needed at BRCP
Depends on how desperate they are to fill the role. Ideally should be someone mid- to late- career with deep experiences, however I’ve seen complex engineer roles filled with engineers with 5 years of experience/after a couple contact engineer roles to fill holes after resignations.
