Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Think of BTC as a preview of AI

If you are having a hard time with jobs moving to India buckle up for the introduction of AI. We all need to learn to upskill and adapt. Being mad at management for change that is inevitable rather than trying to stay relevant by upskilling is a losing satrategy.

AI will eventually be commoditized as vendors and consultants figure out how to rapidly build tools using open source software. Like every other technology in oil and gas, XOM will contract it out as soon as it's feasible to do so. Problem is that most "off the shelf" solutions are garbage because most companies (including XOM) don't have any infrastructure at all to support off the shelf solutions in the first place.

EMHC employees can spew racial hatred towards BTC and KLTC but won't enable to do anything once AI comes.

My advice is Save half of what you earn so you have financial freedom and especially free from these types of worries.

EM is not going to provide you the tools to upskill regarding AI/ML or anything else.

Most EM employees can’t handle mapping a drive or booting their PC after a patch is installed. This is especially true of the self-styled “SMEs”. I have a hard time seeing how people so computationally illiterate are going to make the jump to building complex ANNs for, say, speech recognition applications.

P.S. Most tech companies have a work model that combines collaborative workspaces and WFH, and EM employees (at least the ones posting here) have major issues with both.
