why is no one talking about the title simplification change

Nothing to talk about. Company performs title rationalization every few years. The last one added confusing and meaningless titles. This seems to correct that. But wait a few years....they will do it again.

The notification did in-fact go out today via NEWS NOW e-mail to all impacted employees and includes an embedded link to review the changes. I received it at 3:02pm ET.

I wouldn't call it a simplification at all. More of an alignment between USA and International job titles because of the Workday transition. I've broken down the old vs new Individual Contributor (Technical Career Pathway) career steps for the USA below in order:

Old:
Associate (L1)
Specialist (L1)
Sr Specialist (L1)
Professional (L2) (Example: Professional-Applications Developer)
Senior (L2) (Example: Senior-Technical Process/Quality)
Principal (L2)
Lead (L3)
Distinguished (L4)

New:
Sr Associate (L1)
Specialist (L1)
Sr Specialist (L1)
Senior (L2) (Example: Senior Applications Development)
Lead (L2) (Example: Lead Network Process & Quality)
Principal (L2)
Expert (L3)
AVP (L4) Replaces "Distinguished"

Most supervisory roles are getting prefix and/or minor updates as well along with some consolidation. Most "Area Manager" titles are changing to an "Associate Director" prefix. Examples below:

Today:
Area Manager - Business Field Services
Area Mgr - Construction & Eng
Area Manager Network Services

Tomorrow:
Associate Director-Network Services

ALL Individual Contributor roles will become NON hyphenated and ALL supervisory roles WILL be hyphenated.

Supervisors were supposed to be advised via E-mail on 11/28 and non-supervisory employee notifications are supposed to go out to all impacted employees by COB today via NEWS NOW e-mail.

Not to mention there are people with the title Tech Eng Project Management II and then others with Tech Eng Proj Management II and then one guy has Tech Engr Project Management II
Sometimes they have three different pay scales! You cannot make this stuff up.

For better or worse: Title consolidation is a periodic exercise that (lazy) HR goes through to make their work easier. It marginalizes individuals that have unique roles and responsibilities that might warrant customized pay ranges. The fewer titles there are, the less descriptive the titles will be, as the descriptions will have to be all-encompassing of the possible job duties.

New titles are in part due to the transition to workday. Some are seeing increases in pay, others are not. Remember that with the simplification of titles, you're now in a larger pool of employees with that title meaning you may be subject to culling. Start polishing up those resumes!

Really no impact to salaries. Just some title changes to make them more standard. In some cases it is a little confusing because Leads used to be level 3s but now lead is a level 2 title.

probably because with everything at AT&T, your title has nothing to do with your salary.
And that goes all the way to the top with the stink getting paid for losing money.

Definitely needs a simplification, too many were created in the past from surpluses, reorgs, etc. as stated previously, pay increases as well as protecting sycophants and nepotism. Right sizing ABC title but creating new XYZ for the favored.

I know of one management position that has had 3 different titles created with no changes to the job. A few of the managers in the group having been there over 25 years doing the same thing, only change for them was the title and “on paper”, moving under a different manager in their org. Seems to happen when there needs to be a head count reduction/right sizing.

What’s to say?
The company should be ashamed that they have over 5,000 titles. It was a way over the years to get favorites more money. It’s about time Managment titles got under control.

It’s all a little too late for some whose careers were here and CSuite ineptly led and caused this sad but real situation. I’m one who won’t be around to see it get better. I’m happy for those who will maybe be able to work for an improved, healthier company and for those so hurt financially by this company, I wish there was something we could do but unfortunately there’s not. Very bad decisions were made and behaviors allowed — if not encouraged — and the offenders are either still here and unscathed or already gone with their pockets full. Best to all…
