Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs are just rumors until you are the one affected

I'm tired of people claiming the talk of layoffs is exaggerated. Half of my team thinks I'm overreacting and should "learn to relax." I know people who were laid off this month but since they don't know them, it never happened. It's driving me insane. I guess they'll find out personally that layoffs are happening at T all the time soon enough.

Why would anyone be surprised by Corporate layoffs??

It's part of working in large organizations.

Yes layoffs are apart of life at T. Sounds like you need thicker skin or an appointment with a mental health professional. This is nothing new.

We hear automation in NEO but there’s really not much automation actually happening so not sure how that is translating to job reduction. In the meantime, Accenture getting richer as they are the programmers and people who make it happen.

Half of T employees are the like the band on the Titanic, laughing and playing like nothing is wrong.

It is very real. Jobs are being sent to contractors overseas. They are salivating to automate anything and everything at the cost of customer ‘care.”

No one is safe. Nobody but Stankey seems to be able to avoid the bloodbath.

Happy Holidays. Don’t forget to read the “warm” emails in a can this season from your leadership team about how you and your family matter so much, and - P.S- “Thanks for all you g do.”

I know at least six people in “out of region” that were laid off, so that is either sarcasm or disinformation.

It has happened at T the last 40 years I have been here. Why would it stop now?

“Happened to me because I wouldn’t move to Stankey’s town.”
Is that what you need to tell yourself?

There haven’t been any layoffs. There have only been opportunities for many to live their true designation.

There are no layoffs in the out of region areas of the country, more like there's hiring occurring, looking for technicians and Supervisors. OOR is actually growing the business and increasing the head count.

Happened to me because I wouldn’t move to Stankey’s town. Fully expected to retire with the company but Stinky had other plans.

Layoffs happen monthly now, not the once a year thing it used to be. There is no notice in our group anymore with some folks just get notified that they are laid off and have 2 weeks till off payroll. Not even our directors know it’s coming until maybe a day or two ahead of time, then they have to deliver the news. A lot of NEO technology side getting whacked lately. This is really messing up the backend systems and work that has to be done manually since nobody has invested in those tools for decades.

Hear, hear OP.

This never would happen to me, at least that's what muscle memory was telling me. I skated past many layoffs (stopped counting sometime after SBC took over Legacy T). I've had three bosses laid off, four if you count the one who accepted a move AND a downgrade to stay.

After surviving all that, landing in a group that appreciated my skills (Connection awards, promotion, etc.) RTO came for me and I was out in November. Both my group and I thought there might be a last minute reprieve, but nope! Y'all figure it out!

Now I'm counting my money and looking for employment. Staring down the bills due in December, it becomes very real.

I don't know why anyone that has been here for a long time would still get all spun up about it. That's no way to live your life. If you want to stay, stay...and just understand that you and/ or your group will very likely be impacted. If that is too much for you to handle and pushes your anxiety to unmanageable levels, you should probably be proactive and start looking for a new job.

I have been here a long time (25+ years), and when this regular cycle of layoffs started around 10 years ago, it did cause a lot of anxiety. Since then, I took steps to mitigate that. Got my finances in order. Don't carry any personal debt. House got paid off. I have an emergency fund. I also have made sure to keep my resume and LinkedIn profile updated. Always looking at opportunities out there. I don't want to leave yet as the job isn't that hard, and I am compensated very well. Lots of vacation. And I don't want to forfeit my severance. If things were to get a lot worse over the next couple years, I probably will.

It is very REAL. Sad news is some won’t understand how REAL it is until they are the ones who are tapped. There will be MANY more in the days/years ahead. Just the sad reality. If overall revenue isn’t growing (which it isn’t) this is where we are.

Two very dedicated, intelligent & hard working employees I've known for years were let go because they wouldn't move to Dallas. Stankey fails again.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Its not if you will get let go, its when you will get let go. Get you your stuff in order. Update your resume. Look for jobs every 3-4 months. If you do nothing, you will never relax.

It's not exaggerated by any means. My group lost about 20% of it's people this year and I know other groups that lost a much larger percentage.

Fiber takes a lot less people to maintain vs. copper so union jobs will need to decline over time. Automation will take further non union jobs as well. My opinion is that workday and infor will take HR and Payroll jobs right away.

100,000 people over 5 years is hardy exaggerated. It doesn’t get maximum attention because it’s a constant 1 or 2 here and there every week along with small chunks every few months.
