Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Read the article EVs are 79% less reliable than gas engines. By Consumer Reports.

Why would anyone buy an EV then?

So let's try to sell Mach e's and Lightnings...then tell everyone things will be better in 2-3 years when they can use Tesla's superchargers...then watch everyone wait to buy them until that happens and things are better. Ford leadership...c'mon really? Even still considering the dismal sales already, why would people buy now since range anxiety and charging network is one of the main concerns? Why wouldn't they just wait until it was less of one?

What is we made an electric grid in all the streets for a direct connection, you know like bumper cars at the amusement park ?

Oh, now you people believe everything CR says? Funny, you usually don't.

That article is full of falsehoods and anyone knows BEV's and BEV powerpacks are less complex, simpler, which automatically makes them more reliable.

You'd be better off listening to Ford technical leadership than hooey on the internet.

As you can see from the review of the solar roof in New Jersey, it can only provide reliable energy from April to August, the performance from September to April is really bad and you will need to rely on gas turbine powered electricity (which is less efficient than IC engine) this is after spending tens of thousands on battery storage for one home.

Also let’s not forget 300 miles of electric range is equal to 10 days of full energy usage for an average home

If you're pinning your dreams on solar, take a read:

"Our advanced societies can only continue to develop if a surplus of energy is available, but it has become clear that photovoltaic energy at least will not help in any way to replace the fossil fuel. On the contrary we find ourselves suffering increased depen- dence on fossil energy. Even if we were to select, or be forced to live in a simpler, less rapidly expanding economic environment, photovoltaic technology would not be a wise choice for helping to deliver affordable, environmentally favourable and reliable electricity regions of low, or even moderate insolation, since it involves an extremely high expenditure of material, human and capital."

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0301421516307066

To get to the bottom line, just like the last time the Swiss ran these calculations, solar farms are energy sinks. They cannot replace fossil fuels. So shifting major utility loads onto them will only accelerate the consumption of depleting oil reserves. Sorry, they won't work either. These plans that say they will are based on claims and wishes. When put to the test real world data reveal how inefficient they really are. When analysis is rigorous the numbers don't work. Best you can do is favor places like China for low labor costs and lax environmental controls. You can make a profit on that, but you still consume more than you get back. Hmmmm, what does that say to you?

Greenwashing.

@1nvf here: it was tooth fair_ies that I meant in earlier post.

And now, with auto companies retrenching from full 100% EV lineups (Gm and Ford suddenly realizing full 100% EV lineup is not profitable) , all of these battery plant pipe dreams are being scaled down.

So, here’s another question, is California and New York and Europe going to backtrack from their “zero tailpipe emissions by 2035 ” mandates that scared the auto companies (except Toyota) into these crazy plans ?

@1zdk : how can this be? Why, right here in Michigan, gov whitmer has ordered utility companies to be full solar and wind by 2040. I guess by then she still is believing auto industry will be full EV.

https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/votes/whitmer-signs-clean-energy-package-it-will-cost-you

Not only that, state is taking control over green energy projects. I guess local control means nothing regardless if you can afford a project on your own, and wish to manage it on your own, or if you can’t afford it, state government will force you to sign up.

I guess they are counting on capturing flat_ulence and combustible pixie dust\compost from leprechauns and unicorns and tooth fa----s and Santa’s reindeer to be the remaining fuels to rely on.

The issues of ev battety replacements from old teslas are emerging.
The shockers are now making people aware of the cons of evs.

I remember when battery powered drills were becoming popular. Problem was, the things would die on you when you were in the middle of a job. Then you had to plug it in to its charger and wait an hour or 2.

Sound familiar?

Then someone came up with the brilliant idea of replaceable battery packs that you could just swap out.

Carmakers haven’t learned from cordless drill makers.

Someone needs a lesson in thermodynamics:

Gas turbine generating electricity is only 30% efficient .
Combined cycle gas turbines are 50% efficient, even lesser after transmission and motor losses.
Ic engines 40% efficient, Hybrids even more!

So literally someone driving an ev in Michigan/northern states is polluting more unless they have their own solar farm

People buy EV's because the govt forces it or they got brainwashed that it makes them morally superior... greenwashing or vitue signalling... and there are other reasons too

the short distance before recharge and as battery ages even worse, makes it 'soap on a rope'. very long time to recharge adds lost yearly hours of one's own family time or hobby time. those hours are gone forever. gas engines have a very brief 5 minute refill time at gas station and go a lot further plus pick up trucks like diesel have storage tanks in bed for more fuel storage if ag usage.
