Forced Job Title Change? What’s the catch?

Just got this in an email a few minutes ago? Just trying to figure out what’s the catch? I work in BAT in South Carolina.

New simplified job titles - what it means for you

To: Select U.S. management employees

Did you know that AT&T currently uses more than 5,000 job titles across the globe? This can make it difficult for you to manage your career path or for supervisors to evaluate job applications.

As a result, we’re simplifying by reducing the number of job titles. We’re also standardizing job titles and job descriptions and making them consistent across all our positions and offices. That means job descriptions will be easier to understand, career growth planning will be simpler for leaders and employees, and movement between jobs will be streamlined.

Our new global job structure will be in place on Jan. 1, 2024, and managed through our new Workday system - which will open to all employees in early January. Workday will serve as the new single destination for employees to access and manage essential HR information and responsibilities like recruiting, talent management and compensation. It will replace systems such as eLink, Amplify, CareerPath and more.

How does this change impact you?

Click here to review your new job details. Please note that your compensation will remain the same.

Workday pricing increases significantly once you go over 3500 job titles. It's part of the SaaS model. ELink had to be turned down because of the cybersecurity vulnerabilities. Cheaper to migrate platforms than to fix it, or to pay the next ransom ware bill.

Every change they make is made to sound like its for some noble reason. But it always boils down to proft...
Just like the changes they have made each year to the structure of our bonuses which have resulted in an overall decrease in each person's annual bonus.
They base the pay scale for each job roll on what the job title is paid in the overall job market. So they want to change the job titles to those that will allow them to justify lowering the salary range in the future.

It clearly said that it is a title change exercise and no compensation changes are occurring.

Folks. All this “simplification” makes it easier to break up the company into pieces that can then be sold. From work locations to job titles to outsourcing. All these efforts support making it easier to find buyers. The pieces left will be burdened with debt and go into bankruptcy. Ho ho ho.

That would be really sad if it was because of Workday. A state-of-the-art cloud solution can’t handle 5000 rows of data in a table?!? Pathetic! eLink was old, but at least it worked.

More likely, they’re preparing for future job reductions by increasing the candidate pool size.

It's because of the new Workforce system. It can't handle that many different job titles so they had to reduce the number of different titles. It goes live in January. Double check your data on the first couple of 2024 paychecks.

When you have the same job title and those titles represent more employees, it’s much easier to reduce the number of employees. In the long run it makes sense, but short term, just an easier way to eliminate employees.

A friend of mine who’s a go to employee got his title changed and a $10k raise immediately. He was a bit surprised to say the least.

It will be revealed later that it’s a cost cutting measure. Not sure how yet.

So you came onto an anonymous messages board rather than calling your manager? WTF?

It’s the beginning of making job cuts. Equal global titles will make for easier relocation of jobs can offshore.
