so what makes a layoff a "silent layoff". Its not big enough to make the local news? Or does it relate to just how closely sr mgmt keeps the event a secret until the day of?

It would be best if you were to get your resume updated and start job hunting. Stay ahead of the game. January 15, February 12, and March 29th are going to be big layoff days, especially but not only for engineers. It will make October and November seem like child's play. Enjoy your Holidays!
