Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

A message to MW and Team

I think the fact that I post this here and not on Workplace or some employee survey speaks volumes.

For over 20+ years I have been married to Chevron, for better or worse. Honestly most of it, 99% of has been for better. We have not always agreed, but I never questioned what we had. I knew everyday when I woke up that The Chevron Way was not a glossy brochure it was actually who we were as a company regardless where you were on earth. We were an exploration and production company that had clear expectations & deliverables.

I stand here today more disconnected to Chevron than I have ever been. I am confused as to what the “ask” is from corporate and lost as to what our primary business is. I am d-mbfounded by the recent “if it bleeds it leads” messaging from senior leadership, not because I can’t handle a challenge, but more so because I don’t understand the “why”. Where is the goal post? We truly don’t know anymore.

Our employees understand the following:

  • we are going to make billions in 2023
  • We spent billions(15) buying back stock
  • We spent billions (60) buying companies

This to us is “winning”.

I truly believe I am in the majority in this feeling. Where is the MW who put his college id in the TH and was trying to connect with the workforce. We need him back, not the current Wizard of Oz who is trying to sell the world a trip down the yellow brick road.

MW's Chevron is predicated on cronies and high-pots at the top, diversity hires as showpieces, everyone else is expendable and replaceable. MW salivates at the opportunity to replace 20-year people with cheaper and impressionable college hires. He fully expects them to quit once they find out how they're being used, but they can be replaced with more college hires.

MW is listening or caring about your woes. If you don't like the way the company is being run then move on. He can find somebody cheaper and naive so they can pull the wool over some newbies eyes.

You are right 100% MW and management are punishing the employees with constant cuts, layoffs and disruptive changes all while making billions. They should be ashamed of themselves but will not be due to the blinding greed.

IMHO the main problem for Chevron, or any other large oil and gas corporation, is the dwindling opportunities to find and develop large resource plays. If you can't economically explore for oil and gas, then Chevron must buy it on Wall Street. Wildcatting is becoming a lost art. As a result, the company's goals have to adjust to the reality oil and gas really are finite. The US needs to start the transition to a restricted hydrocarbon future and they are using Climate Change as a motivator (real or not).

A sad commentary indeed. The vision at the top has been lost and that trickles down across the whole enterprise. Yes the world is heading toward a lower carbon future, but the transformation will be long and there is considerable opportunity for profit from hydrocarbons along the way. Gas can be a major part of the near term future (if we control methane releases) for earth transportation and heating. There are still huge issues replacing oil for shipping and air travel, with no obvious choices forward. Although everything changes over time, there is a bright future for oil and gas companies if they use their capital positions to evolve to address new challenges. What we see from our current Sr. management is f-c this, we are lost, return equity to share holder via stock buybacks and boost an golden exit payout for Sr management… over and out… close the doors on your way out! So OP, you ask why you are feeling abandoned? Just join the party, through the deck chairs into the boiler and head home.
