Why Nike’s culture is toxic…

Summary: From Uber to Nike to CBS, recent exposés have revealed seemingly dysfunctional workplaces rife with misconduct, bullying, and s-xual harassment. Why do companies get caught up in illegal behavior, harassment, and toxic leadership? Researchers identify an underlying cause: a Masculinity Contest Culture. This kind of culture endorses winner-take-all competition, where winners demonstrate masculine traits such as emotional toughness, physical stamina, and ruthlessness. Surveys of thousands of workers in the U.S. and Canada, from different organizations, revealed four masculine norms that together define masculinity contest culture are are highly correlated with organizational dysfunction: 1) show no weakness, 2) strength and stamina, 3) put work first, and 4) dog eat dog. But these norms lead people to focus on burnishing their personal image and status at the expense of others, even their organizations. Leaders need to perform deeper, more committed work to examine their cultures, and take action where it’s needed.

TLDR; it’s not you; the culture is sick and rewards the wrong things making everyone else sick. THIS is why we’re not innovating right now. I wish leaders would get it together and look in the mirror.

Meh… not the feeling I got in my 3 years here. More like a passive aggressive, nice but not kind culture that take advantage of you all who saw Nike as a dream job. My advice.. treat your career like you’re an athlete* and don’t fall for the “family” cr-p.

The passive aggressively inability to give direct feedback at Nike is not traditionally a masculine trait.

This may not define you but it is prevalent. I was severely harassed for almost a year. People knew and did nothing until “they“ hated the person and used my story to get them fired. My voice was stolen. To this day I am not the same. Check your proud masculinity. We should always protect each other and especially women.

There are so many more reasons Nike is toxic than these traits

It’s not just men. In my experience, there are a lot of women who want to see another woman’s downfall.

I wouldn’t take it literally. I think OP means that these are stereotypical aspects of masculinity that can become unhealthy when used over and over. “Not all men” and all that. If these traits don’t define you great! Sounds like you’re a healthy person.

As a masculine person, this offends me. Those are not the traits that define me.
