Thread regarding Ford layoffs

When is next massive round of layoffs?

Wondering how many more paychecks I can rely on before I get thrown out to the wolves

@ 5apz. The secretive behavior is for two reasons. They don’t want any untoward behavior from soon to be cut. And they want the soon to be cut to work (not loaf) til the end.

@5bhr+1pe188Cs While I am not aware of any Ford employees laidoff in Xmas, I know agency personnel at Ford that don't get their contracts renewed for the following year, their last day is just before the holidays. Therefore, Xmas is a nerve wrecking time for agency contractors.

What makes this even worse, is that the agency knows in advance the contract is not going to get renewed, but cannot tell the contractor about it. I am guessing some BS secretive policy at Ford is at play, since all agencies behave the same. Therefore, many contractors just find that they are out of work after the last working day of the year. Of course, that "Xmas present" from Ford is enough to make many contractors mad with the company, and we lose some vehicle sales because of that secretive behaviour.

@5ghs - highly unlikely. I don’t recall ever having a salaried workforce reduction during the holidays. Also, who has offices to clean out? Only the higher ups because everyone else sits at random desks.

My LL4 says they are coming over the holidays when many can quietly clean out their offices and disappear.

IMO the UAW strike will have nothing to do with any further white collar cuts.

The reasons - all of the big three knew this strike was going to happen; furthermore these contract end dates and the bargaining dates are known, as well. They also had a pretty good idea how much it was going to cost them. In addition, the building and move to lower costs business and engineering centers in India and Mexico did not happen overnight - this has been going on for years.

Bottom line - the roadmap for having fewer white collar in NA was set up years ago and is an active plan before even the prior UAW contract - heck I was still there when Mark Fields announced the new building campus plan; which at the time woke many of us up because the plan had far fewer buildings….so something had to give. I increased savings at that point and started to throttle back spending cause I knew I likely would be gone in a few years. Sure enough…

Point is this - what is going to happen is already happening, the plan is already in place and being worked. Sure, adjustments are made from time to time, but the overall plan/reduction of NA white collar by 30 to 40 percent (the amount needed to go to fit into the redesigned building spaces) from when the grand campus redesign was introduced likely has another 3 to 5 years to go. Build up a huge emergency fund (think 1 year worth of funds rather than standard 6 months) to weather the storm, if you have good abilities and selling points, start a soft job hunt but understand could take up to a year to get another FTE job….and you might have to move or travel, too. Just how it is anymore. If you are older like myself, hope you already have a good size emergency fund and just continue to show up and do your job as best you can, just don’t do any more extra work and stop trying to climb the career ladder. Focus on Enjoying your time left knowing it will likely end sooner than you want.

Mine did by about two years; never wanted to work until I was 65. Was going to call it quits from Ford at 60, when at the time I was 57 almost 58 and thought just two more years I’d have a million in retirement then could leave on my own terms then get a hobby type job. Well did not turn out that way, so now likely have to work until 61 or 62.

Immediately after the strike is settled. The spreadsheets are ready for the hourly wage increase inputs, the bottom line will be how many salary need to be terminated or moved to low cost countries.
