Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Layoffs After Agreeing to RTO and Relocating

Are people who agreed to relocate being laid off ?. Because if so that is a definite lawsuit.
So I ask again, are those who relocated still being laid off ?

Anytime you see that a role is eliminated, that means it will be reopened in the new location. Role is tied to a location, not the work. The jobs aren’t leaving att. Well, some will, but your boss won’t be left in a lurch.

The only people relocating are the ones that know or think they cannot find a job outside AT&T. In other words, all the top performers are leaving and the one's left behind are not employable elsewhere.

@mqk+1pfUmKef, you probably cared a lot for the 110+ bellow you, trying to help them, advise them. The tactic of this company is to get rid off the caring manager, to later move the team to "no-manager" manager, and then layoff bunch of those 110+.

I relocated. Then they expected me to actually work. That was too much. Then they laid me off.

"I relocated on my dime, surpluses 2 months later."

Troll post.

I relocated on my dime, surpluses 2 months later. I really believed I was showing my loyalty to at&t by following my work, I was a blue chipper. Now I have a new 30 year mortgage at 8% in Dallas, at my age of 48. Not finding many companies hiring and the few that are hiring are not paying at&t money. Relocate if you want but loyalty should not enter into the equation whatsoever.

Relocating to where your job is now does not guarantee you that your job is safe in a surplus situation.

100% not accurate. Google "employment at will". They can lay you off at anytime, for any reason in most cases.

Do the people that agree to relocate receive some guarantee of future employment?

No- they do not.

See "employment at will". There is ZERO basis for any lawsuit.

Employees who have already moved have been laid-off not long after moving. Moving won't save or guarantee your job.

As someone else has rightly pointed out, the choice to relocate is a highly personal decision. It's perplexing to see people criticize those contemplating a move. Everyone's circumstances and preferences differ. Perhaps an individual is dissatisfied with their current location, renting, and considering a move to places like Dallas or Atlanta, among others. Just because it might not align with your situation doesn't mean it's not the right choice for someone else.

Before anyone starts passing judgment, let me clarify that my comments above do not reflect my own intentions. I've informed my management, who is also in a similar situation, that moving is entirely off the table for me. I've never even entertained the thought of relocating, especially with kids deeply entrenched in high school. This decision is what works best for me and my family.

I also concur that there are no guarantees. You could move a thousand miles and find yourself laid off six months later. Therefore, my advice is to consider a move if it aligns with what will genuinely make your family happy, rather than moving solely to safeguard your job. There are no guarantees, and in my personal opinion, that could be a risky decision. But again, it's a personal choice.

Relocating is an individual decision. It was the right choice for me and my family.

What?! People have only been talking about this happening since ... well, when did they announce RTO? The warnings started BEFORE that.

Hey @mqk+1pfUmKef Development Manager, we have some Accenture resources to help take over your work. They're only 12.5 hours off your time zone, don't have computers (just non-configurable HVDs), and cannot access many internal sites because they are NPWs.

(This is how we will be improving productivity in your absence.)

Yes, I was notified on 10/23/2023 that I would be let go on 11/06/2023. I refused to drive 60 miles one-way to be at an office where no one I know works. My letter said the company was eliminating my position. However, I am the development manager of a team of 110+.

What would be the basis of a lawsuit? The relo letters are not going to include any type of promise of continued employment, and employees will be making their own choice to relo or not.

T will be shedding 75K employees over the next couple of years. There will be no stability.

There’s no basis for a lawsuit. Horrible business practice but no lawsuit there. Think wisely before relocating.

Yes ... people who were stupid enough to overturn their entire lives and move their families across multiple state lines and time zones to chase their spot with T will be laid off.

Some of them will find they are no longer part of T in less than a year after their move.

But again, if you were stupid enough to take their offer, uproot your (and your family's) life, and relocate there is no sympathy for you when you get the inevitable notice that you've been surplussed. You get what you deserve for trusting T

Absolutely not a lawsuit. Do you have a choice to relocate or not if you do that’s on you, there’s no agreement with the company that you will not be laid off in future workforce reductions. You do not have a contract for employment with the company.
