Managers are not there to help with your career progression. They are there to execute orders or to improve their own chances. You are marked if you outshine your boss and they see you as a threat. There have been instances where supervisors and direct reports end up in the same rank group. In other instances, department managers will not elevate names of the best individuals for an open position in the best interest of the company. These are positions are reserved for the circle of friends. Cronyism at its best.

There are plenty of snake in the grass managers who know how to navigate the system and manipulate people into compliance. There’s a new crop of them that has been elevated over the last 3 years.

These individuals look out for themselves. Don’t be fool when they give you the impression that if you go along with their ideas that it will “help” you in your career. Or if you don’t, it’s a career ending move. There will be nothing you can do about it because they know not to leave a paper trail on these conversations.

Management is tone deaf when you don’t row with the boat. Complaints will be swept under the rug. Designated minions will be the first one thrown under the bus.

Good advice. The problem is that the little we---e "supervisors" who have no real say in anything and only take small direct linear orders try to talk big to their "subordinates" as if they really know something. The real word only comes from HR, take anything else with a grain or pound of salt
