Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

It feels like layoffs have stopped for the most part

Is it just me, or does it seem that layoffs have mostly been replaced by PIPs? I know a few people who are absolute rockstars who were put on PIPs. I don't have any other explanation for it except that HON wants to get rid of them without giving them a separation package. Am I wrong?

Funny I was also a high productivity employee and then suddenly put on PIP and told to improve communication. What is that supposed to mean? I always responded to email within 24 hours and proactively communicated bad news. There isn’t anything additional I could do but it’s a generic enough complaint that I can’t fight it. Just their way of saying you are being replaced with someone cheaper.

I agree I know several older employees that I bet would happily volunteer. Heck I might do it because I am so sick of working here and take a break for a while.

layoffs have been happening... just not in your department.
The last round hit corporate impacting IT and other support functions.
The mandate to move all clerical work to the lowest cost work center continues.
This trend will reinforce India where wages continue to be rock bottom when compared to the world market. The trend will hurt Czech where neighboring Poland offers much lower wage workers.
Look for honeywell to continue to follow Dave Cote's rule : work flows to the lowest cost labor source.

If they sincerely want to reduce the workforce, they should offer and accept all volunteers. I work with many older aero engineers that are basically hanging around waiting for a severance package. Instead of ridiculous mandates and lengthy PIP process, just ask for volunteers; you will get all you want.

The next round of layoffs will be voluntary driven by return to office initiatives and dramatic changes to retirement and pension plans driven by rising interest rates. Cash is king. Going to be quite the trick as you will get a raise and wonder why your check is less come April.

@khu+1pvJThZb I also keep repeatedly hearing there is a mandate next year to significantly reduce workforce, I guess the cheaper that can be done the better for VK.

It’s up to Honeywell whether or not you get a severance package, however, they cannot deny unemployment for “performance issues” (a PIP that failed). If you’re let go for cause, then they can deny unemployment. For cause includes violating company policy (nasty 3-2 compliance email anyone?)

I’ve seen for myself recent actions that are setting people up with an official paper trail so that they can be let go “for cause” easily (and unfairly). So everything is on the table.

Bottom line, they are trying to make life miserable enough that people leave on their own. They’re also they’re putting things in place to easily shed people for performance or cause. All this saves them $ vs. a layoff. They want a smaller workforce in 2024.

My understanding is that even if you are laid off after a PIP, you will still get a severance. Honeywell must treat you the same as they have treated other people in your situation. Remember that Honeywell is extremely averse to litigation. If anyone gets laid off with a less than optimal package, see a lawyer. Also, if you end up in front of a judge and win, in most states the award is not taxed. There are benefits to having a lawyer in your pocket.

I agree. The job I was hired to do was eliminated in June and, rather than be honest and lay me off with severance, they put me on a PIP three weeks after my midyear review in Sept. It was full of vague goals -- e.g., "improve communication" -- without measurable metrics and ends on Dec. 6. I find that timing to be quite a coincidence. Very dishonest and underhanded, I think.

There’s absolutely an effort in play right now by management and HR to make people leave. PIPs are just the paperwork they need to justify a removal. There are all kinds of unjust employee actions happening all over right now with the end goal of shedding people without paying any severance package. They think you- employee- are d-mb. This company is abusive. I’ve been here for over a decade. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen it right now. Also- I truly don’t think management or HR gives a sh-t about optics. They view the rank and file as a liability.

Could be the quiet before next years storm?
I am surprised but maybe VK learnt from DA that dropping RIFS before the holidays/401K payout was pretty bad for public optics and internal morale.
Aggressive PIP strategy would certainly be more discrete way to impact numbers/reduce costs however just based on the current atmosphere, horrible decline of internal business this year and the economy on a potential kn--e edge I think next year is going to be very rough. Couple that with the rumors of big changes afoot I have already started looking for a new job and many of my colleagues are doing the same. General sense is that it is time to leave.
