Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Company layoffs if needed, will restart for landline techs in 2024

https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/att-union-agreement-29000-technician-jobs

AT&T lost a lawsuit with the CWA Union in 2021.

The settlement terms; Protecting 29,000 landline technicians jobs until the end of 2023, hiring 6,000 customer service employees and paid MLK holiday for all union employees. All other titles weren’t included in the job protection agreement and have had surpluses throughout the last two years.

If needed, they will probably restart landline tech layoff announcements on Dec 15th for the 1st quarter of 2024. They did add MLK as a paid holiday, unknown if they have hired the 6,000 customer service reps.

In case you didn’t notice, it is a settlement from a lawsuit, guess who lost. Can you say, breach of contract!

If those landline techs were really needed, they wouldn't need protection. AT&T would be begging them to stay.

You only need them if you want to install and maintain the network for wireline and mobility, so YES!!

The company is furiously hiring techs to meet the EOY number required.

Personnel phone text messages for hiring events. I have never received a text message from the company unless it was about my service.

“ They will need all the technicians they can get for the next three years to switch over from Nokia to Ericsson O-RAN and Fujitsu Radio Units. Nokia equipment is being pulled out and Ericsson and Fujitsu equipment will replace it. Radio Units are on cell phone towers, so they are going to have work for those technicians for sure.”

You think AT&T is paying Ericsson 14B for AT&T techs to do the work???

Pay attention. This article is about wireline not mobility.

Over this next year, there will be a few targeted surpluses in C&E, I&M and CNIO. Titles - FT, ST, OPT, DEG DT’s and System Techs, only speculation on the numbers.

They're actually backfilling OPT, DEG, System Techs, and Splicing Techs here in AT&T West with permanent union members which means we're already at barebones. Comm Techs aren't being backfilled.

About time union job impacts. Suppliers and contractors are going to be busy these next 3 years swapping out that Nokia equipment. Wishful thinking that ATT would use badge technicians, NOT. Get paid based on unit price, no milking the clock.

Basically a rearrangement of deck chairs, they’ve replaced very few techs due to attrition over the last couple of years. Techs will be needed to build out, maintain and decom the old/new network. The company will be ramping up projects and fiber installation again next year.

Yep time for Scrooge/Grinch, Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year layoff! If not now then definitely next quarter. They rarely pass the holiday layoffs though.

IMO,

Over this next year, there will be a few targeted surpluses in C&E, I&M and CNIO. Titles - FT, ST, OPT, DEG DT’s and System Techs, only speculation on the numbers. First Line managers and engineers will be probably be involved in surpluses, at some point. They are trying to go back to the engineer contractor days of yore, that never worked long term.
