Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Completely stressed out

The unhealthy work environment is getting to me. I've only been here for less than a year. How do people ever manage to deal with this long-term?

@4ply What about all the REs/SMEs who copy & paste gibberish from API into purchase specs all day and expect to be paid $300k annually? Are they any less unrealistic (or entitled) than the new grads you’re $hitting on?

It’s not a rhetorical question. I’m looking for a real answer here.

There are many companies out there with similar or more compensation and a better culture.

Why all the down votes for @2utm+1q3AMkHP

It is worth understanding if OP has realistic expectations of what it means to hold a job.

A lot of these university hires have never had to work and don’t understand the reason you get paid to work is it isn’t fun.

@OP take it from an old hand the best stress reliever is going to the restroom and beating one out while screaming in ecstasy like a little gurrl.

Not only will you see an immediate decrease in your own stress but will also help your colleagues copy your technique and also reduce their stress.

OP AND EVERYONE ELSE READING THIS POST GET THE HECK OUT OF EXXON. Did I say that clearly? Let me repeat it GET THE HECK OUT OF EXXON. Remember that Darren wants another six billions in "structural savings" which means layoffs disguised as low performance assessment. OP if you don't want to have a heart attack leave now. Do it for your health.

It is simple. You will become an alcoholic or have severe health problems.

I know it is easier said than done, but just do your job, don't play games and keep your head down. You may not fly high, but you will very likely not hit the ground and burn.

If you do your base job well, you will survive all the PDS cycle w/o getting near the bottom at least for the first 10 years of your career anyways. By then you will be earning close to if not more than 200k and have 10 years of industry experience under your belt. You can then decide whether to play the game everyone is complaining about in this forum or seek other employment.

Get out. There is no hope to change the culture. It would take a massive shake-up. There are better companies out there with equivalent or better pay. The toxicity at XOM wears on you until you can’t distinguishes right from wrong. Complete lack of care from managers.

It use to be that you can outlast the bad boss so don’t give up. Now it is you have no hope of outlasting the bad bosses so you must accept the reality. 10 years ago you could always outlast the bad. Now the bad bosses will always outlast you due to the corrupt and self serving behaviors of every mid level and senior manager that remains. RSUs,EBUs, and Cash Bonuses reign supreme. Need Berkshire Hathaway to buy and clean house. Oh well the last sentence is a pipe dream.

Former XTO employee her that was sold to XOM. Here's what I did. The first day I became retirement eligible was to do the paperwork and retire. There's no reason to work for such an awful company. Mr. Bob Simpson proved that you can have a wonderful work environment and pay the employees very well, and still become the largest natural gas producer in the U.S. That's why XOM had to buy it and destroy it. Couldn't let the completion beat them at their own game. Glad I'm out of there.....

This post is an indicator of org health. XOM has a problem and frankly, the only solution is removal of CEO, CFO, Pres and some VPs. Unfortunately, this will not happen, so you’ll have this culture continue for 10-15 years. Go find another job, Management really doesn’t care!

@ymo+1q3AMkHP Exactly, this is where it's got to over the last 3 years or so. Nothing left to do in projects unless you're in field activities. Must be even worse in EMTEC.

The main source of stress is all the miserable old men making $200k+ per year who complain about everybody, everything, everywhere, all the time.

Situational irony: the people complaining about how stressful it is to work there are the ones creating the stress.

Dramatic irony: by becoming lackadaisical, detached, cynical, and complacent, senior/high-dollar employees have brought about the very organizational changes they complain about constantly.

@OP Get another job.

I’m not saying that to be an a$$hole, I’m saying it because it’s the only real solution available to you. Either that or you purchase a majority of the shares and force a leadership shake-up.

It does get worse. They start outsourcing or offshoring your job, then there is nothing available for you so they stick you in a sh-t job and tell you that you didn’t rank well because you weren’t in a leadership role.

There are two sources of stress working there. The work itself, and that caused by the duplicity of management. You can find ways to adapt to the work stress, but nothing can be done about the other.

Jenkins Lloyd Jones siad:

“Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he has been robbed.

“Most putts don’t drop. Most beef is tough. Most children grow up to be just people. Most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration. Most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. …

“Life is like an old-time rail journey—delays, sidetracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed.

“The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.” (Deseret News, 12 June 1973.)
