Remember when Obama said "if you want to keep your doctor, you can keep your doctor"? Watch your plan, you can keep your doctor you just have to pay much more money and list him/her as a specialist instead of a primary care physician.

I was involuntarily terminated in August 2022. I was going to leave anyway because of the interest rate issue with the lump sum pension. It was before I wanted to retire, but I'm glad I was let go. It was better than losing 21% of my lump sum.

If I look back at all the cr-p I put up with, the lump sum was worth it. I doubt I would have fared better by changing jobs every few year.

Don't assume everyone with 35+ years are all set. Some of your compadres were victim's of the "Ford to Visteon to Ford" shuffle who found their pension left behind because they were "new" employees when brought back to Ford and subject to the "new" retirement package which DID NOT include a pension. So yes having just turned 64 I would like a severance, bring it on! The only reason I stay is because we also lost the retirement heath care benefit.

If you have 35 years in, should you really be waiting for a 9 month lump sum to retire? Why aren't you gone already? If you aren't hanging on for the love of the job and to stay busy, saving any financial struggles, sounds like some better financial planning is in order. If I had 35 years in anywhere and didn't completely love what I was doing, there wouldn't be time to tell me goodbye before I was out the door. If you have kids in college, 9 month's of salary less taxes isn't something that's going to give you that safe push out there door. Start making some decisions and quit procrastinating.

Couple of prevalent sentiments I've seen mentioned on here:

  1. Ford is where your career comes to die - No that's your problem.
  2. If you got let go last year you were lucky. - Maybe if you aren't resourceful, have no prospects, and think you need a severance to survive (just bad contingency planning if that's the case).
  3. You've worked at Ford so many years, automotive is all you know. - If you've worked anywhere for more than 10 years, you're out of touch with the current work environment. 10 years is pushing it. Moving on now is one of the only ways to protect yourself, grow your salary and career.

If you want to work at a single place out to retirement, start your own gig, work in a factory, or work in a skilled trade. Knowledge workers that don't treat themselves like private contractors will be compelled by corporate decisions.

I've worked at a Ford assembly plant my entire life. We've always known that the corporate folks were nothing but a bunch of clock watchers. Smart Redesign was just the beginning. SIRP was the big step that was needed to shake some sense into those corporate lazy bones. Now leadership will slowly consolidate and offshore most of the other functions remaining in Dearborn. Ford will remain a US-headquartered global company - with assembly on US soil and by American citizens - and all 'corporate' functions moved to low cost countries. This is the result of a bunch of over paid clock watchers wasting FoMoCo's time and money.

I've worked for several companies over the past 35 years. They all su-k. Ford wasn't the worst. The best was Ford in the 80s and 90s. Young people today just aren't used to to the job insecurity and layoffs because they've had it pretty good for the past 15 years. I assure you, being an employee su-ks.
