Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

No reprieve from layoffs

I was thinking about leaving Cisco and I've been looking at what's available. I won't lie, I was surprised to see there are quite a few good options available. I thought the job market was much tighter.

What I didn't like is the fact that every company I looked up because I was thinking of applying has the same issues with layoffs as we do. Every single one. I checked here and on Glassdoor and a few more places and it's always the same. Either several major rounds each year or constant surgical layoffs throughout the year.

I don't want to end up in the same situation if I leave, so now I'm reconsidering leaving. What would be the point?

I beginning to believe a majority of these posts are coming from the UK.

At Cisco I worked with people in the North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and the story was always the same. I live in the US and in 35 years in the workplace I've never worked anywhere without significant layoffs. Cisco is the only one that hasn't been bought out.

As for OP, your career should be far more than avoiding layoffs. If you want more fear make sure you have enough money to go without a job for a long time if you're old. If you want more hope make sure the job you are in allows you to grow skills so you remain employable, pays you enough to live reasonably now while saving for the future, and leaves you a bit of time for whatever you call a life. Given half of Americans pulling in six digits are still hand to mouth by definition you'll be doing better than most.

Options available? Have you applied for one? Unless you have a very unique specialty, you're competing against hundreds of other applicants, most laid off last year and still looking.

The entire UKI org is a cesspool of toxicity. There is a superficial polish of professionalism on surface but underneath that is a culture of strong-arm tactics, unprofessional antagonism, bullying and condescending patronisation administered by the SE director, empowered by an impotent VP. I am glad that I was an LRee out of there too. The peace of mind alone is worth it. Believe me.

If I were you, I'd hang on until you are put on the LR list. This way, the decision to leave is taken out of your hands and hopefully, you'll get a good severance package as I did last year. I have no regrets, as the environment in Cisco CX UK+I is the worst I have ever experienced in my 20+ years with Cisco. I took a few months out and I'm now back in a contractor role with a more dynamic / fun organisation. Yes, there is life after Cisco and a good one at that.
