Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Notice days and accrued PTO

My grade level requires 30 days notice for resignation. Since BNY no longer pays out accrued vacation, if I resign, and have 10 days accrued, can I use that as part of the 30 days? Basically work 2 weeks and use vacation for the other 2 weeks. Or would I have to use it before I give notice and then work another 30 days? Or give 30 days and just forfeit it.

I'm assuming it's option 2 or 3, because this place su-ks.

@4doc, that's hypocrisy, not irony.

Submit your days first. Then submit your notice after they show approved.

An irony is when I joined the bank I wanted to give 30 days notice to my former employer as it was the right thing to do to wrap up some assignments I was on and BNYM said no - they needed me in 2 weeks.

If you don’t give 30 days, really what are the consequences? You don’t get bonus or match, which you weren’t going to get anyway.

Always use a floating holiday first. Those are accrued once every 4 months. So right now we all have 1. Plus we get 13 ‘sick days’. People on my team use those up like they’re going out of style. Already had 4 people ‘sick’ so far this year for multiple days in a row.

Should floating holidays be used before quitting since they are not paid out or can they charge employees for taking those? Don't trust this place, would like confirmation

I realize I don't have 10 days accrued now. This is a hypothetical for later on in the year if I were to find a new job.

I read through the offboarding docs on mysource but couldn't find a clear answer. Just wondering what others thought.

@ J. David Barnes

Not correct, if you have 5 days carryover and 20 vacation days in a year, there would be a total of 10 by end of Q1. You of course have to use the carryover by end of March or otherwise lose them…

Ignore it. I gave 15 weeks notice and followed all Good Leaver policy, picked up three weekends of off hour work and was bonus eligible and was expecting $15K.

I got nothing. Had I known then what I know now I would have given my notice on the day that I walked out. My manager was an Ahole though.

"Basically work 2 weeks and use vacation for the other 2 weeks."

I would take the 10 days as to leave 1 or 2 days at the end of the 30 days' notice to then go back to the office (online) and quickly meet with your manager, so that he can't act in bad faith and tell HR that you did not give the expected 30 days.
