Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Lack of motivation 😪

Got laid off almost exactly a year ago, found out everything my 12 person team was doing would get thrown away and shutdown. Was rehired within Cisco and now layoffs seem imminent again.

It’s making me lose a lot of motivation to work until I know if I’m impacted. It’s demoralizing to work for no reason or to do busy work knowing it might get thrown away and in a month nothing will matter except getting a new job.

What do I do to cope? Do I bother expressing concern to manager or just coast and whatever happens happens.

you are getting paid every day to work regardless if you're lack in motivation, whatever you do counts, or you might get laid off next month. A job is just a job to make money so you can pay the bills at the end of the day. If you lose cisco job, take a break and go find another one.

Not sure why motivation needs to come from the job. It pays the bills and that is about it.
Don't get me wrong I would love to build a team, strive for excellence and with respect to my private life give it quite a bit of energy. However a reality check needs to be in place. This is Cisco. teams get re-organised faster then the seasons come and go. (because constant change is good.... ) The is little to no strategy/direction where we want to go in CX and mediocrity has become the norm. Or even the stretch goal depending what team you are in. Use your energy, put it into family / hobbies / anything that matters on the long term. Resistence is futile (c) against this downward spiral (c)

Never heard a high performer who got LR... Cisco does lay off based on incompetency .

Cisco massively promotes the incompetent, and the higher you go the less likely they are to get rid of you even if you are eight levels beyond useless. If you're at a remote site and they take out your manager or director, everyone under them including you is going. When they do more individualized layoffs if your management is weak politically you're far more likely to be toast. I've seen real talent go these ways.

The good news for those who are legitimately high performers is jobs are always available, as they were even in the 2008 crash. Always keep your skills and your professional network up.

Very tough to focus now, put in the long hours and the extra effort while knowing no matter how much you produce in the past several quarters up to now does not mean you are safe.

Mentally and physically LR's takes a toll. It did for me. You need to get really honest with yourself if Cisco is the place for you. Why? Because this isn't going to be the last LR dude....it will keep happening. The best person to talk to is a career coach or a therapist. DO NOT talk to your manager because they're going thru it too. They know you're having a hard time...they are too. The whole thing sux.

What I did, was get my FU money in the bank. When these times rolled around, I knew I was going to be OK. You need to take care of you mentally, physically and finacially. When I was let go, I walked out the door, took time off to reset because I had planned for it. Best thing that ever happened to me.

So what do you do? Get on the EAP, take training to skill up, go for walks/runs, stay hydrated, eat well and sleep...take naps. This will all pass and you'll get back to work, time will pass and the next LR will show up again....cue the circus music.

If insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, then the act of returning to Cisco to be laid off again makes you insane.

Quite Quitting is the answer.

You'll get used to it and wake up in the street to realize you haven't continued to build your skill set and are essentially unemployable. The person the bottom of this thread telling you others don't care about your career is correct. You are your only advocate and you should be working in your best interest, which for many at Cisco is getting a better job elsewhere.

Continue to do your work and pretend you know nothing about the upcoming WFR. Talking with your manager won't result in anything. I believe mgmt has been told to keep quiet about it until the earnings release on Feb. 14.
