The Ghost of Bad Quality

Another cost save that bites us in the pocketbook.

Ford Motor (F.NaE) said Wednesday it was recalling 2.24 million older Explorer sport utility vehicles worldwide because trim retention clips may not be properly engaged.

The recall includes 1.89 million SUVs in the United States and covers 2011 through 2019 model year vehicles because the trim could detach, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday.

Ford said it was unaware of any reports of crashes or injuries relating to the recall.

Dealers will inspect and replace the A-pillar trim as necessary. The A pillar on a car is the metal piece that supports the windshield. Ford stopped using the part in 2019.

Ford said it expects 5% of the vehicle population to be impacted. Owners of the affected vehicles may see gaps around a loose A-pillar trim or detect audible rattles or excessive wind noise from the A-pillar area.

The automaker said it first received an informal inquiry from NHTSA in 2018 related to exterior A-pillar trim parts detachments on 2012-2014 Explorer vehicles.

Ford said that in 2018, it determined the issue did not pose an unreasonable risk to safety. In 2021, it reopened a review of the issue but again determined no recall was needed.

In February 2023, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation to review the issue and in August, Ford received an inquiry from Transport Canada over the same issue.

NHTSA told Ford the trim detachment while driving was a road safety hazard to other vehicles. Ford said it was aware of 14,337 warranty reports alleging missing or detached exterior A-pillar trim parts.

Yep, had a 2016 Explorer with less than 500 miles and the A-pillar trim piece went flying on the highway.

@mje+1qJ1qOyo remember the old Taurus ice melting windshield? that was expensive to replace also, but at least it was a great feature.

We need the brackets team to spring into action! They always hold ford motor company people and parts together - way better than Elmer’s glue. : )

@cft+1qJ1qOyo the detroit 3 never seem to get out of the legacy behavior. they get close at times achieving japanese levels of quality and even surpass it sometimes. then some big shot MBAs come in and nickel&dime the parts and overall engineering and we get recalls. found on road dead, type of things. they coast off to big bonuses and move to florida. while some japanese managers would feel self shame at such bad quality. is it a stereotype? i suspect so, but there is no shortage of examples. it is sad but seems to be true.

Ford will be using Gorilla glue to attach the trims. That will work better than Elmer glue.

No worries. This is typical of Ford vehicles. The vehicle is still drivable. It's a blessing that the wheels are not flying off.

Strange. I was told RTO would solve all of our quality issues but this product was Engineered prior to WFH.

New technologies in an old legacy system equals new recalls. Model E still has pressure to reduce cost and will be negatively impacted by last minute, management driven changes that will haunt the new platforms. We have seen it over and over and …….

This is an old platform designed/engineered by legacy Ford. Our new technologies and the vehicles developed now are much improved and will improve even further with next-gen Model e offerings.

The worst A-Pillar for Windshield replacement and insurance cost. Too many breakable parts and clips that cannot be reused once removed.

Total Junk and inferior products... No wonder Ford's position is declining just like Boeing! Good job on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion... And all that useless cr-p. From Trim pieces to door plugs, the USA is in decline.
