Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

ATS Wave 2 Letters

Leadership is estimating 60% of ~1200 people won’t choose to relocate in Wave 2 (as compared to 50% in wave 1). HR has created a model that says that.

The actual numbers from Wave 2 will determine the amount of ‘downsizing’ that will come next (as per communication from ATS leadership).

This was the reason that these letters are pushed up to Jan’24 from June’24 (communicated last year).

Just heard ATS Brickhaus just issued a "Mandatory meeting" for Feb 5th 2024 - Legg did state there were some layoffs coming, well here it comes! Good luck to those who got targeted, but they must be the ones who don't want to move or are not passively sitting and accepting.

The majority of off payroll dates will be done in April and May.

The reason for the april through December dates is for leadership to plan your back fill. managers will determine who is most critical and how long will it take to find a backfill and transition. The more complex your role and whether you are specialized, the more likely you will have a December off roll date. If you have a job that can be picked up with little knowledge transfer closer to April.

I think I figured out the play here.
Att knows that senior (i.e. older, higher paid people) will take the max severance and say no they won't move.
Most the younger people will lie amd say they'll move just to keep a job longer since they won't get much severance.
They'll then lay off the wave of people that said no, leaving much younger and cheaper employees, then walk back the forced relocation.

Therefor fulfilling Stankeys vision of age based layoffs without legal culpability!!!

Anyone who can't spell WAVE deserves to be fired.

The number who actually move will be under 10%. Most will just say they are moving and then keep getting paid until they are fired because they are not eligible for enough severance to bother declining the move.

Vague dates in waive 2 letter make me do the math and as a result I will say yes but I have no intention to move. I don’t give a f..k to the severance or unemployment pay. I’m certain by eoy I will find better job with better company.

As someone only eligible for about 2 months severance pay, I'm really not seeing why I should decline the offer even if I'm not willing to move. They didn't communicate what date you would be off payroll if you decline, so we have to assume it will be ASAP (April). I stand to make more money saying I will move and then putting in my two weeks before my report date to the new location.

Honestly, without giving us real dates for this stuff and instead giving us vague clues like "no later than year-end 2024" and a massive range of time somewhere between April and December for being off-payroll, how can they expect us to tell them the truth?

One thing is for sure, if I got a letter that says I'll be gone sometime between April and Dec with notice 2 weeks before, my productivity would be almost zero. My job would be finding a new job.

“Received my waive 2 letter and choice is simple. Will take the offer and work till end of year. Not planning to move, but this will buy me time to look for another job and and more money in my pocket than severance pay.”
This really isn’t a wise choice. You will end up being be fired from T for nothing more than a couple months difference in pay.”

This exactly. If you haven’t found a job by the time the move date comes you are fired - no severance, no unemployment. Best just say no and take the severance. The more that say no, the less likely the relo thing even happens.

That is true testament how leadership is disconnected from the reality. Maybe it is time to make the changes and replace the top.

Also, make sure your financials are in order at all times. Avoid those big purchases or big vacations. You should have enough in savings to cover a minimum of three months of expenses. I was surplussed last year. I wish all you the best of luck.

No level 1 or 2 position is safe. Remember, AT&T just made a $14 billion dollar/5 year deal with Ericsson. Where do you think AT&T is going to get $2.8 Billion dollars per year to pay for that deal? At an estimate of $250,000 cost per employee (Salary, 401K match, Medical , unemployment insurance, etc.) they will need to eliminate at least 11,200 positions per year for the next five years to balance out the cost. Also note that employees are not in the Asset potion of the balance sheet. Employees are a cost. I suggest you keep your resume up to date, practice interviewing, update your LinkedIn profile, and try to reach out to recruiters. At&t is on a goal to reach 100,000 employees.

I see some smarty pants here from HR responding. The architects of this disaster trying to prove that evil T always win.

"Letter says I have to be in my designation by end of year. If I accept this, does it mean I won’t be laid off this year?"

I do not think there is any safeguard, they may be projecting your position will be there through the end of the year but that could change.

“Why off payroll dates are not known?”
It’s been known for over a year many would be off payroll in 2024. It is time for those affected to implement their backup plans. Many more to follow later in the year.

“Why are so many acting on this board like Wave 2 is a surprise? Anyone awake knew this was coming.”

  • not surprised at that, surprised on poor execution and communication. Did anyone receive a call from their AVP? They all hid behind outlook. Bunch of cowards.

I’m guessing they want to stagger the layoffs instead of just a final date for everyone. There are many reasons to do it that way

Why off payroll dates are not known? You can’t play with people like that. It’s not good for the corp and not good for the employee. HR and young leadership in this company are really fu---d up.

The unknown layoff date range is weird. I guess they want you to look for another job and quit so severance doesn’t need paid.

As communicated by ATS leadership RTO and relocation is pure layoff. I get it. What I don’t get is what is the purpose of the waive 2 letter telling me that I will be laid off between April and Dec and I will be notified about the exact date 2 weeks before. We all know very well how layoffs work here.
