Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Plano, TX

I’m in St Louis and in wave 2. Got my letter last week to move to Plano by EOY. Anyone else going to Plano? How is this area?

Look at the bright side, you’re moving out of the mu---r capital of the US. That’s a good thing.

Is St. Louis not a hub anymore?

Don’t move, there is no guarantee your job will still be there. I know of two people who moved from STL to Dallas in wave one, only to be laid off before Christmas.

Make sure you set up a contingency fund so you can afford to move back to where your family support network is...just in case it does not work out at ATT,

Schools are more and more crowded due to the flood of migrants. Locals are in minority in all cities and their suburbs of Texas

Plano is much better than downtown esp if you have a family. There are lots of opportunities to work outside of At&T in Plano, if needed. The traffic to dallas from a decent neighborhood is 1 hour min. Affordability is another thing. Try finding a place near DART the traffic is horrible.

The traffic has Hs gotten worse since 2013 and the tolls are very expensive.

One thing about moving to NTX - if you're let go - there's so many employment options vs. STL. Plano = Chesterfield. Dallas is also changing to N3 salary band in March.

Plano is a nice area but expensive. Some big companies have established large presence’s there. Traffic will su-k if you actually have to drive downtown for reporting. Yes people are moving to the Celina, Prosper areas but the ones I know who have done that was due to housing costs. Yes there will be more layoffs but that was going to happen if for no other reason than technology. Don’t believe the plans are for everyone to report to the center downtown. Dallas proper and the burbs are/have become contiguous due to growth. You can cross a intersection and be in another town. Worked in a lease location and when the lease was up everyone was moved to various locations in the Dallas area. Very few were moved to the plaza.

Instead of moving find another job

Don’t listen to the negative comments. Yes it is risky to relocate with this company. But Plano is a great town with great schools. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s a great place to raise a family. If you choose to relocate and want to stay with T, it’s not a bad place to be at all.

“ I didn’t think Plano was a hub. They will probably eventually move you to Dallas.”

There are several AT&T offices in the Dallas area not just the corporate office. Plano is just a suburb of Dallas. There isn’t enough room at the main office for everyone.

Plano, McKinney, Frisco--All are expensive places to live. Check Zillow, you'll see limited inventory and premium asking prices, the available homes usually sell quickly and with many buyers coming from California generally making all cash, as-is offers over asking price. Good luck,

Dallas is the new LA. And Plano is the new San Fernando Valley. Trust me, if you love California you will like it in Plano. It's a very diverse area with people from all parts of India and a handful of native Texans. I'll warn you that the non-Indians are mostly moving to the northern exurbs like Celina and Prosper. The commute from there is pretty slow. Like LA slow.

Plano is an ugly commute to Dallas when they move you to the hub. If you don't get laid off first.

Here's a guarantee from AT&T...you'll be laid off anyways, move or not! It's just their heartless way of dealing with the personnel overhead!

Congratulations on the offer to move. Not every employee is receiving this option. This is a first world problem.

The Plano office is completely saturated...you'll be friggin miserable there, to say nothing about the traffic, home prices, and property taxes. Oh yeah, and that whole getting laid off anyways problem...

I’m not sure about your circumstances, but I’m also from St. Louis and was instructed to relocate to Dallas to maintain my position in August 2023. After applying to numerous positions, I eventually secured a role at MasterCard. Although I had to sacrifice part of my pension, which I was only five years away from receiving fully, the increase in salary was beyond my expectations. Housing prices in Dallas are outrageous, and the traffic is dreadful. I highly recommend exploring other options before committing to a move. Additionally, be cautious as this company has a reputation for swiftly terminating employees after they relocate.

Seriously, you’re going to move with absolutely no guarantee that you won’t be laid off once you get there?
