Layoff while on leave?

I am on child bond leave.
Would they still lay me off while on leave?
After my leave finishes?
Would I still get severance?

No. However, you aren't guaranteed the same job when you get back. That's the hitch.

I’ve sat on both sides of the table in Cisco LRs, giving and receiving the news. Honestly, it difficult giving the news. I’d need EAP if I had to deliver that news to someone on leave. How disgusting is it that ELT doesn’t have to do that themselves. They don’t have to feel a thing. Chuck, Fran, Scott, Maria and the rest of you…all of you are sick people. How do you sleep at night?

If your job is important and you parental bond 6 months without checking in for weeks then you are done. !if you clean bathrooms then relax.

It’s a business decision not a personal decision that depends on your situation.
Trust me, I won’t keep say a Java developer on staff if she is in leave and while on leave her project was cancelled.
As long it’s not a discriminatory reason, they can lay you off.
Have a few months saved for times like this.

all depends on which country (and the labor law of it) you are in. For American, you sure can be LRed and I think the last day will be normal LR date or the date you are back from leave - whichever one is later.

Sure. You can whacked while on leave. Probably makes it more likely since it's emotionally easier for mgrs. to layoff people they don't see face-to-face.

Can't change the layoff decision but would it be at least the same Severance package after coming back from leave then laid off?

They will the first day when you come back.
Someone who was on long term absence was part of the Dec 2022 layoffs. When he came back in June 2023. He was laid off directly

It's legal to layoff a resource while they are on leave. Even if it is parental bonding leave.

Are they likely to do it? They're getting by without you now, so is it fair to lay off someone who's actively producing for the company today, instead of you?

they asked for a quick 2-3 mins meeting while I was on leave. it was for layoff. so yeah you can get laid off while on leave.

i am not sure about child bond leave. just don't accept calls during your leave. who knows it can protect you till your leave finishes.
