What can you do if your performance review contains inaccurate info?

I know that the company is doing the forced ranking system and what the end goal is, but I have several comments that are lies/fabricated on my performance review. The writing is on the wall and I’m already looking externally. Just doesn’t sit well when you know a manager has targeted you and is making stuff up.

True with an unqualified Manager you are reporting to, any one little mistake made during an entire year will be blown out of proportion on the Managers performance review, becoming their main focus on your performance, just to get you into the bottom of the performance review ranking and dump you. Little mention of all the good things you did. No bonus due to forced ranking at the bottom of the list.

Fight it! Keep your documentation. Facts over emotion. Go on record with HR. Everyone notice that you can no longer provide a written response to your review! Do your self-elevation and update it monthly. Protect yourself.
This place is all about the favorites and friends.

Manager made their move. Now it’s your turn. Call HR and get your beef on record. Yes I know it won’t result in a damn thing. Meet with your Manager’s Manager for the same.
Say what is not factual and explain why and how they are violating WF values. Ask for proof of the inaccurate statements and where/when/how they were documented AND discussed with you prior to your review. You need to take the Manager out before they take you out. Document everything. Send notes after every interaction. Say or do nothing offensive and ensure you follow all company expectations.

Note, the Manager will not lose their job but you need to make their phony process difficult.

Look I hear you are disappointed. There are likely few scenarios here. Please don't take offense and read knowing that I wanna support you here, not criticize you:

  1. manager is evil, and ok purposes put in inaccurate info, maybe because they are pscyho, or something triggered it.
  2. the role you are in requires more than you do, but you are not aware of that and think that you are doing a great job
  3. you did a good job, but there are many others that in the same level that did more, and management gave them meets and not you

Now be honest with yourself and think which scenario is most likely. 20 years in banking, I can assure you if you are mature enough and have good self awareness, it's number 3. If you have low self awareness, it's number 2. There's a 1% chance that it's number 1. People don't wanna give 2 to their teams and risk losing them, unless something triggered it and they are already considering losing you (or getting rid of you).

My 2 cents. Hope the best for you bud. My gut is telling me you are in bucket 2.

Nothing. There is no rebuttal option. I asked HR/ER if I could write something in response to my review (e.g., inaccurate statements needing clarification, evidence to the contrary) and have it entered into my employment file and they said no -- there's no option to do that.

Before the forced ranking I posted out of a department at 10 months because of how intolerable the management was. In my review they put all the shortcomings they had and blamed me. I went to HR and provided team meeting slides, a forest worth of emails all to refute every point. They literally blamed me in my review for the scenario I gave them that led me to post out. I did not have unrealistic ideas of what they should be doing as management, btw.

It took about 3 months but HR made them re-write my review. My rating was the same, as was my money. Luckily, I had a great new manager (I got the job I posted to) who backed me 1000% and when they found out HR could make them change the review but not the compensation they put in for an off cycle adjustment to resolve that.

I was extremely lucky and I had my poor management dead to rights, almost exclusively in their own writing. If I had not posted out I doubt it would have even happened but there’s no way to know. The HR person was horrified when I had the emails - lots of them. My former direct manager was also demoted after the whole incident but is still there, in another job.

Very little! If you have not thoroughly documented all of the rebuttals of the inaccurate information the chances of success drop dramatically. If you have documented rebuttals and have not met with the manager to discuss and work out the issues success probability drops to zero.

You’re probably a really good person and you probably ki-led it but they don’t give a fu-k cause they will just keep paying you low!

The case is most managers will try to rate you as meets even if your on the border line but a lot of times you know if you’re not as good as peers.

If this is true and your mgr normally likes you then this is likely a case of forced distribution and mgr is just writing as they need a reason. Contest it if you wish. Call HR and they will tell you how. But, as the prior poster said, are you really a meets? Do you want to find out? Will it crush your spirit? be sure you really feel you have evidence that you don’t deserve the lower rating. No repercussions should happen. It may send a signal that you really are paying attention and if you can showcase work this year increase your chances of higher this year. Up to you.
