RTO slight retraction Rumor

I heard a rumor that the RTO ultimatum has been rolled back to "Encourage rto if within 50 miles of an office, but not required. Adding that they instead want people to meet up with other IBM'ers 12 times a month, which can be lunch, coffee, happy hours, etc..."

Can anyone confirm if this is true, or just wishful thinking?

so IBM won’t cover rent and a mortage just to be under 50 miles. Are you living in the real world. They are going to kick you to the curb with minimal severance

All of the impacted managers have been notified. NOTE IBM was only gunning for the folks who were more than 50 miles from an office or customer site. If you were within 50 miles and got impacted, you are just icing on the cake. Now it’s just a waiting game to see who is willing to move vs who will take the free parting gifts instead. I suspect IBM is anticipating 4k worth of head count to be impacted, thus the 400 million dollar pre-announce. Look for most departures to happen sooner vs later as IBM would like to apply the savings earlier in the year vs later. Either way, USA head count is definitely going down

A lot of IBM real estate has been downsized over the past two decades. Even the projectors they have mounted to the ceilings in the conference rooms are equipment that is decades own and the video quality is poor. Even long before the RTO mandate, I remember driving into an office and all the mobility spaces are filled up. It was a waster of a trip for me. They used to have something called Fleximove to reserve a mobility space. Going into the office made sense when we had special account planning sessions for the larger accounts were IBM Consulting, and Hardware and Software sales would all participate. But usually a couple of days at the most for those account planning sessions which might have been twice a year.

The operative words are “if within 50 miles” The folks outside of the 50 mile circle will still be impacted and that’s what IBM was after in the first place

@toh I assure you, IBM does NOT care about your mortgage and your commute time. In fact, IBM is deliberately making it as inconvenient for you as possible ... hoping that you'll just quit in frustration, so they can avoid paying you severance.

Not happening. We all know by now IBM never ever takes a step backwards. They have made a decision and an announcement and damn the results they will keep moving forward.

I sure hope it’s true because over 50 miles of a drive takes a lot of time out of the day to do meaningful work. And some people cannot move due to kids and financial obligations. My house is under FHA loan. I couldn’t move out and rent it out until 2 years so IBM won’t cover rent and a mortage just to be under 50 miles
