Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I am not moving

Why should I uproot my family for a company in which neither I nor anybody else have a career option? I move, and then I get sacked a year later regardless of how skilled and hard working I am. No way. If reorgs have had any sense beyond cutting cost in the short term, then fine. I can have an idea, at least, for the foreseeable future. But with this style of management, I am not taking any risks.

25+ years craft, level 32, only been surplussed once, offered a job 4 miles from my other work location. Was involved in, “force in balance” a couple times. In total moved about 10 miles from my original starting location. Was a reliever for many years and offered management positions many times but decided I liked my craft job, the work rules and job security better. I’ve changed titles once for a new challenge and better working conditions, still a level 32, wage is same.

I have weekends off, don’t have to play politics, less stress and don’t have to take my work home. With overtime there isn’t much difference in pay, I actually made/make more than several of my management friends even with their bonuses and small raises. It’s worked well for me and my family, hopefully you found what works for you and your family. Everyone has a different path to success and happiness.

In contrast, several of my coworkers and friends decided to leave their bargained positions for opportunities in management. Only 2 are left out of many, the rest either were involved in layoffs, refused to move to Texas or found opportunities elsewhere. All but one said it wasn’t worth it and wished they had stayed bargained, even one who advanced to Director level.

I know it’s anecdotal but that has been my friends and my experience working here. 5 to 10 more years and I’m outta here, let the younger employees have their opportunity. I’m modified rule 75, retirement eligible now but still too young and want to work a little longer. One big thing that is lacking, that should be improved is, the contributions to our retirement accounts, pitiful compared to other large companies.

in the old days craft jobs usually moved a half dozen times due to surpluses.

Please don't move. Tons of job opportunities coming to those in Dallas already. About time this company is making everyone move to centralized location. Not personal, just business.

I wouldn’t move either. Nor do I understand all the union comments. I personally know more union people that got the choice of ‘take a new position in another state or get laid off.’

I didn’t move and found another job with a great company. I was MISERABLE* at T but I am very happy now. The best thing that can happen to you is getting surplused, your severance, and a new company to work for.

*For how little I worked, I dealt with extremely high anxiety, slept very little, and my health was terrible

The flexibility you think you have is not worth the misery

Contract expiring doesn't have any effect on union members who are on Employment Security protection. Unfortunately the facts don't match your feelings on this one.

Union employees still get minimum 90 days notice. And many get extended job security protection after those 90 days. Management is for su-kers.

Why do you do that? I know you have the minimum education required by law (high school). When you are surplussed after contract expires, you will be singing the same tune that the $40+ splicers are singing now making $13 bucks an hour now somewhere else.
I know this, I am Union and I saw the splicers get surplussed. CST is the next title to get a major headcount reduction.
You can gloat about "management" getting sc--wed over all you want. It will not save you in the end.
You are an embarrassment to any Union employee that respects those that have tried improve their lot in life.

"What groups are being told to move? "

All of finance is being told to move to Dallas, with a few exceptions.

The 90 day notice is now down to a 14 day notice. Glad things are much better for you now.

I had 90 day notice and then my severance back in 2019. The stock was much higher and the payout % was too. I remember thinking this is a blessing in disguise. It was.

" You sound like you don't have the protection of a union contract."

So boring dude. Same boring schtick over and over. Not witty. Not clever. Not funny.

You know what's not boring? My 122% bonus payout.

In case you haven’t been around here long enough, even people “under the protection of a union contract” still get laid off and are often forced to move if they want to follow their job.

This is good, because no one really wants you to move. You aren’t needed as T continues to streamline operations and manage costs.

Anybody that moves for this company is a fool! This company is in a tailspin and the layoffs will continue throughout the next 2 years or so. They're coming after you regardless, there's no protection even if you move!

My manager met with the team about 2 weeks ago. He said that our jobs are moving to Dallas. He gave no time frame. He said we will need to reapply for our jobs, and if accepted, we will have to move to Dallas. there are no guarantees, of course. If there's a round of layoffs, you can be laid off even if you uprooted your family and move.
This is a bad move on AT&T's part. Maybe they don't care.

The more people that say no to the move the more likely no one will have to move. Just like last time. I got asked to move, told them no. Just waiting on my 2 week notice. In the meantime, I’m looking for external opportunities.

To move or not to move. That is the question.
Hope people made wise decisions and Stanley will have to abandon his evil plan.

You don’t have to be an as*.
YOUR time will come probably SOONER than later based on the current people in leadership as well.

Remember, KARMA.
