The tyranny of the yellow status

So how long before they start running the numbers on MS Teams to see how long you are in yellow? But isn’t it worse to be green all the time? That means you are always available- ie Not busy ever. I think I’m developing a twitch because I have to tap my mouse when I’m on a long call so I don’t get the dreaded yellow. Forget about water cooler collaboration. Go red or go to bed.

I have mine set to permanent Away. People can guess if i’m actually there or not. Create your own ‘mouse mover’ put a small oscillating fan on your desk and then tape a ruler or chop stick to both and turn on fan. The mouse will move with the stick. Otherwise just google free python or powershell scripts and run those as everyone has python and powershell installed.

@ilk
Can't mouse movers be detected? What's best one to buy? Tired of Teams saying I'm away when I'm on calls.

Well, with all the in person collaboration and spontaneous brainstorming thanks to RTO, shouldn’t we all be yellow?

(Yes, this is sarcastic)

There are so many tools running on your machine, teams yellow doesn’t mean anything. You should be more concerned with a tool like Aternity (already on your box). It can tell you which apps you used, which urls you go to and idle time on your machine. Just do you.

If you’re worried about appearances, setup a teams meeting with yourself and share your screen with yourself. Presenting all day.

Also, directly from Microsoft: “ If MS Teams program is running in the background of your device and you're not actively using it, although actively using other programs so your computer is not idle ,the status will still be changed to "Away" after five minutes.”

@sqd+1qTsrzjZ and @ffd+1qTsrzjZ, unfortunately, you couldn’t be more wrong.

WF does not have the most recent version (or even close) installed on our computers. You can easily check which version we are on by going to the “about” link in the app and clicking “version” and then checking that against Microsoft’s website.

It is a known issue per the article about from Microsoft. Literally pull up teams on one screen and let it sit there while working on another screen. Check your other screen after 5 minutes just by glancing at it…..don’t click on teams to check it because that will be “interacting with teams”. If you just let it sit there without clicking on it, being in a call or sending/receiving messages , you will see it shows you as away after 3-5 minutes.

Those spouting words as fact should go test so you can see that you are wrong.

The entire crux of Teams status is once you start it you are Green (assuming no blocked meetings), you will remain in that ready status the entire day while working outside of teams IF: A. Your system does not go into an OS idle/locked screen state B. You use your mouse or keyboard often enough to keep Teams from going idle (this time is shorter than computer idle time).

If you let your computer go idle/lock or spend long enough reviewing static content that Teams is allowed to go Idle then the only way to restart your status is to bring Teams to the forefront as the active application and manipulate the mouse.

My teams was being normal like several of you pointed out, and would stay green while I worked. A couple of months ago, I went VDI, laptop slowed, one drive stops synching from time to time and now if teams is on r screen while i work on left, it goes yellow. IDC but thought I’d explain my experience. I noticed if i moved teams to the left screen and minimize it, it thinks im there. its only when i leave it on one side and wk on the other that it goes yellow.

Even if they were monitoring Teams status (which they are not), it would not be a tyranny. You are delusional. How about you actually work for 8 hours a day and then you don’t have to worry about it? The problem here is not the employer but the employee who is a thief.

P.S. At this time the ability to deploy code to monitor Teams status is only available in a limited beta status via the MS Graph API.

@ffd+1qTsrzjZ Well, must be a bug then or something to do with VDI confusing it

A user's Teams status is as subjective as WF's Workplace Strategy. No one can tell if either is working.

Per Microsoft “Your current presence state changes to Away when you lock your computer or when your computer enters idle or sleep mode.”
It’s based on the status of your computer not the Teams app.

@sqd+1qTsrzjZ My teams doesn’t do that. I stay yellow unless active in teams itself

@rha+1qTsrzjZ my teams works the same as described by this guy. Not like Skype where it detected activity on the laptop in general, keeping me off yellow. With teams, I’m yellow even though I’m active in other apps

It's not going to happen, but if your boss is ever d-mb enough to ask why your status was yellow for "too long", just say "I was collaborating around the water cooler in accordance with guidance from the CEO" and walk away.

False
This statement is easily disproven. Moving your mouse cursor instantly switches you from an inactive status to an active status. You don’t actually have to interact with Teams. I know this because I have eyes and can see.

Teams only tracks your activity in Teams itself, so it can’t be used as a tracking mechanism. If you have Teams up on one screen and are working on another, Teams will show you as “away” because you’re not actively engaged with it EVEN THOUGH you are there, at your desk, WORKING. That’s how it was designed my Microsoft because it isn’t like Skype where it records your status overall……

I bought a second cheap wireless mouse and I turn it on and leave it in my pocket all day. The natural subtle body movement constantly moves your curser just enough to keep you permanently red/green but not so much that it interferes with your ability to use your primary mouse to work.

Teams status isn't meant to track what you are doing. It's the implication of status that people think it is used for tracking. There are way too many jobs out there in WF that have tasks that show you are "away" that don't require you doing keystrokes every second. If they want to try tracking in teams for productivity, that will go south pretty quickly.
