yes, absolutely. this is called INSERVICE ROLLOVER.
Fidelity will give you the math on what $$ can be rolled over. each person account contribution will different and thereby what can be rolled over varies.

you could do once every 6 months.

401K pre-tax dollars goes to ROLLOVER IRA
401K post-tax dollars goes to Individual brokerage account

They must have changed the rules since I was an active employee. At that time you could not roll any out to a self directed fund.

I’m pretty sure you can, check the site and it will tell you how much you can move. Mine says I can move the whole thing, so I’ll be opening an IRA early next week. Gonna take a bath on that Vz stock though.

if you have an individual acct at Fidelity, you can also buy other fund families through them.
TRowe Price for example.
After leaving VZ, you can roll it over to a Fidelity self directed IRA from the 401K plan and basically do it all on line through NetBenefits.

As an active employee, I just transferred a tiny portion to a personal IRA through Fidelity. ($2500) You can trade freely for the most part.

You can transfer a portion of your 401k to an IRA in fidelity, but not the whole thing.

As an active employee, no. All you can do is shift your allocation around within the Vz Plan until you leave the company.

@1wdr+1qVem8CT sounds like you enjoy comparing fund performance

@1zoz+1qVem8CT and you might be a Boglehead with your VTSAX

Team, behold…

FSCSX - compare its returns over life of fund (35 years) with index funds starting at the same point in time.

The sad part is the 401k options are so much better than they were many years ago. Just let me VTSAX I mean FSKAX and chill.

"Just curious. What would you invest it in if you could do a self directed IRA?"

fidelity has much better index funds or ETFs to but that out perform what Verizon offers us. the target date funds from Verizon are a joke. the only thing that makes money are

US LARGE CO INDEX
US LARGE COMPANY
US SMALL COMPANY
INTL COMPANY INDEX (this is just OK I use it to break up my investments)

other wise what we have is trash

If I could do it myself I would do(25% in each)

FNCMX
FSPGX
FXAIX
FBGRX

these FAR exceed what Verizon offers us. you could never look at vanguard funds too, you can buy those on fidelity

You can set-up an individual IRA with a Fidelity account. You will have to establish it and transfer funds to what will be either completely self-done IRA or a managed through a broker IRA. Make sure it is done properly or it can be a taxable event.

sounds like a perfect question for fidelity

I’ve had a self directed brokerage before, through AT&T! Verizon does NOT have it.

If you have it, Fidelity will ask how much of your 401k balance you want to allocate (up to 50%) for the self directed part.

Choose any stock on the exchange! Unfortunately we do NOT have it.

No, but you can take the Verizon stock out and move it into another type of account. I do this each year and have the money managed by fidelity.
