Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It’s been a few years

I haven’t been on this thread in years but with many of my colleagues being surplussed or fired (often for ridiculous reasons, if you are a level 3 or higher they are basically finding ways to terminate you to not pay a surplus package) and reaching out I thought it best to post a message here.

Background: I worked for AT&T for over 10 years in sales starting in retail and then going over the B2B. I was lucky and enough to find a job during the surplus process and was ready to leave.

Some advice, if you are on this site you either know something is coming or are not happy at T. Good time start planning your exit. T will have more layoffs this year, as is evident by their revenue per employee (being about 30% lower than VZW or TMo). Finding a job outside of T can be difficult because many employers (especially smaller ones) don’t want to take a chance on a large corporate “cog” whose they perceive as not being a self starter.
The obvious starting point is your network but then what? The advantage of working at T is that it’s a well known company and many of the skills and training you had are transferable, find the desired roles you want, pivot you resumes accordingly and pay for LinkedIn premium (it’s worth the $20 a month).
Secondly, while the initial job jump is hard from ATT, it gets better. One year after leaving T you’ll become a significantly more attractive candidate, why? Because then your perception is someone who has the institutional training that a large company has to offer but you’ve been able to “make it” outside.

Lastly I know it can frustrating, believe me my last year at ATT I applied to over 50 jobs with no call backs. But just be open to creating different resumes based on the position, be willing to take a step down when necc (companies outside of ATT often pay more - think Tech), so like an AVP would make the same as a director or senior manager in some companies. Use the technology out there to give yourself a leg up. There are dozens of AI resume builders, fine the one that best suited your needs. It’s worth the cost (sometimes) as they are built to get through AI gate keepers.

Good Luck, and I promise the grass is greener.

If you can’t write a resume and get fired what will you do about money? Better start learning a skill.

“Not a big fan of the company. But my union job is too easy for what it pays ($100k base) and they've got me with the golden handcuffs pension. Also doesn't hurt that our union contract limits how far (never out of state) the company can force us to move.”

This is fairly tone deaf message. People are losing their jobs and it seems like you are…well a d*ck.

I am an hourly (clock in, clock out) non-union employee, and I feel like we definitely get the shortest end of the stick. We are the ones they are currently "training" for contingency planning for the CWA West contract.

I have watched the company cut down the people around me in the worst way possible. For example, they are not disclosing the end dates to those impacted by wave 2. So in addition to feeling miserable, they now have to undergo constant psychological torture of waking up every morning not knowing when they're being executed.

And yeah, I get it. I've been here long enough to know what game HR is playing at. They are hoping these employees will stress out and quit so that the company doesn't have to pay out severance or PTO. Rick "Legg" Moranis can say whatever he wants - there's no excuse not to give someone an end date.

Actually, Legg was the most honest of the bunch. "Just quit." He said exactly what the company wants you to do, without playing stupid games.

If this is not a reason to unionize, I don't know what is.

If you're struggling with callbacks, I'd argue it might be worthwhile to invest in some human help. Go with a resume builder on Fiverr or Upwork. Someone who has positive ratings for callbacks.

Use ChatGPT for cover letters, but don't use it for your resume. It's good for writing bullsh-t fluff to fill a d-mb requirement on an application, but it is not good at writing facts about you unless you pre-fill the prompt with your entire work history.

If you're going to do that, you might as well just write the resume yourself.
