Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It isn’t just AT&T

https://www.androidheadlines.com/2024/02/googles-ceo-fails-address-company-morale.html

Stankey and Pichai must have come up with their “tough decisions” claptrap at a bar in Davos or Sun Valley or whatever. Even FAANGs are no longer the shiny objects they once were.

These guys have no clue about the impact of their “cultural shifts”, they efficiency or whatever other BS euphemisms they use. They sure will never have to worry about bills, unpaid relocation etc.

And yet these CEOs wonder why employees are disillusioned, push back on RTO, don’t trust leadership and everything else. They could really use a heavy dose of reality but I doubt it will ever happen.

“ Quit acting like it's only happening at companies that RTO.”

The Google piece is about layoffs and how they have ki-led morale, not RTO. At AT&T, RTO and the ‘culture’ BS is being used to cover for and lie about a layoff.

It’s ultimately the same thing, the employee gets sc--wed, but posters like this feed their lies with like constant Costco cr-p and nobody wants to work BS. It’s probably these posters who are going to Costco or more likely a bar and not working.

Quit acting like it's only happening at companies that RTO. Layoffs are up and morale is bad in general. Tech firms that employ Gen Z in their pajamas at home are laying off people--Discord, Snapchat, Instagram, etc, ad nauseum. There's just a growing number of employees who seemed to be bummed that they have to work at all and want 6 figures to work as little as possible. But dang, those trips, phones, cars, and all the trappings of what they've been told will make them happy cost money.

All good but I don't think AT&T cares how the employees feel. They played the loyalty game in the 1980's seeing who would move to New Jersey. However they did have some fat relo packages at that time. Also you didn't loose your job at that time, you just would never be promoted. This company is a hot mess right now. I am waiting to retire when they RTO me or lay me off and I am not lifting any heavy boxes until that time comes.

Leadership should use sites like this as a tool to improve the employee experience.

This is where people aren't afraid to express how they really feel. We can't do that in surveys or on AT&T internal sites. I know people who have been reprimanded for asking tough questions without the layer of anonymity.

When the Q&As are no longer anonymous and questions can no longer be up voted, they are just trying to silence dissent.

When Leadership sees the employee sentiment turn around in forums like this, then they are succeeding. That is actual "culture" change.

They don’t care, and they probably discount how much low morale lowers productivity - just how they’re over-estimating how much being in the office increases productivity.

It also doesn’t help that management at this level is surrounded by yes men (and women) who just tell them what they want to hear because they’re worried about their jobs as well.

They ignore the ‘vocal minority’ affected by these types of decisions and most other employees just keep their head down hoping to not get noticed and lose their job even though morale overall declines significantly.

AT&T has also ignored this, and ignored the impact on morale for people not having to relocate, the environment it creates is awful, the pace of all projects I’m on has been cut down significantly as teams deal with this and morale tanks. Most people are worried about updating skills, updating resumes, filling out applications, coming up with contingency plans, etc, instead of doing project work - as they see the direction the company is headed even if they aren’t effected by RTO and relocation. Worse still is everyone in a hub is affected by RTO and no one has had anything positive to say about the office experience. Productivity was cut significantly once all the devs were back in the office and had to deal with commutes, finding a seat, distractions, etc.

Company surveys are also useless as usually only happy people fill them out, as they aren’t really anonymous. Thus, people who are miserable tend to not voice their concerns out of fear of getting singled out and losing their job.

Upper management is in a bubble, true anonymous sites like this, and Blind are the only places to get a true gauge of how employees feel.
