Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM is the leader in AI-related patents

IBM — not Microsoft, Google or OpenAI — tops the list of firms with the most AI-related U.S. patent applications over the last five years, according to research shared first with Axios.

Why it matters: While patents are just one indicator of research intensity, the increase in the total volume of AI-related patent applications indicates strong interest, especially among large tech companies — and IBM's lead could show that its AI push is more than just marketing.

ChatGPT creator and AI pioneer OpenAI didn't even make the top 25 companies on the list.

IBM got out of the volume patent game 2 years ago and has since focused on patents that can be commercialized. AK was quite smart to focus on this. The AI announcement tells me IBM is throwing a lot of effort in that direction

Most of those patents were a drain on costs in terms of going thru the process of getting the patent

There was an article written a few years ago by analysts about IBM being a leader in patents. The conclusion was that while IBM was a patent leader, that most of the patents end up going nowhere due to IBM having major problems with execution. Gartner is well aware of this.

99% of them are nonsense patents that no one cares about, will never make it to product, and will never generate a single dollar of revenue for IBM.
